Developing Greatness The Origins of American Photography

Developing Greatness: The Origins of American Photography

A groundbreaking exploration of the first generation of American photography.

The exhibition presents classic works from this pivotal era, as well as many newly discovered images that have never before been exhibited or published.

Organized by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and culled entirely from its recently acquired Hallmark Photographic Collection, the exhibition features almost 300 works, from one of the earliest known daguerreotypes to one of the first hand-camera "snapshots."

Important sections of the exhibition are devoted to the Civil War, Western landscapes and portraits of the era's leading personalities.

Organized chronologically into two main areas of focus, daguerreotypes and paper photography, and then further subdivided into major themes, the exhibition offers a new perspective on a period of great expansion and enterprise in American history.

Photography was the "cutting-edge" imaging technology of the day, a radical new means to both record and "invent" the world.

Photographers responded accordingly: Many were dedicated documentarians, while others explored the medium's expressive and creative possibilities.

Together both approaches fashioned an endlessly rich collective image of both the facts and the spirit of the age.

Domestic Dystopia a Photography Exhibition by Ho Hui May

Domestic Dystopia: a Photography Exhibition by Ho Hui May

Kay Ngee Tan Architects Gallery is pleased to present Domestic Dystopia, an exhibition showcasing works by photographer Ho Hui May, first prize winner of the 26th UOB painting of the year award, Photography category.

Hui May Ho is a photographer and a lecturer.

She received a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Academy of Art College, San Francisco 2000; and an MFA from the Museum School / Tufts University.

She has recently exhibited at the Singapore Art Show 2007, and has shown at the Esplanade in Singapore as well as at numerous venues in San Francisco, Boston and Singapore, including the Judi Rotenberg Gallery, Somerville Art Museum, and artSPACE@16 in Malden.

She has also won prestigious awards overseas.

Ho has taught at the Millennium Institute in Singapore, at the Museum School on a Graduate Teaching Fellowship, and is currently lecturing at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore.

As a photographer, Ho has always believed in "making use of all situations".

She embraces ephemerality, and is drawn to physical evidence which she believes indicate the inevitable gradation of a culture.

Recently, her work has become more personal, propelled by memories she has had from moving from place to place.

This is her first solo exhibition since returning from overseas.

Domestic Dystopia provides an insight into six interiors of dilapidated houses in Singapore.

Decompression Chamber

Decompression Chamber

Seven leading artists / designers create bespoke microstructures, which offer visitors a place for contemplation.

Five of the seven works have been specially commissioned for the exhibition and each is a one-off experiment in working with technology and either new or sustainable materials.

In every case, visitors are invited to enter the spaces - providing a refuge in which they are isolated from the world, the spaces become vehicles for transporting us to another place, offering either sensory deprivation or overload, and shelter and solace.
