This exhibition - the first devoted to Claude Lorrain (1604-1682) in the United States since the Gallery's retrospective in 1982 - presents a rare opportunity to see the important roles played by drawing in his work, both as an exercise in itself and in relation to the development of his paintings.
Claude was one of the foremost landscape artists and draftsmen of the seventeenth century, and many of his greatest drawings have been selected from the incomparable holdings of the British Museum.
Eighty drawings and a selection of etchings and paintings represent all aspects of his style and subject matter, from informal outdoor sketches of trees, rivers, and ruins, to formal presentation drawings, to elaborate drawings from his Liber Veritatis (Book of Truth), a remarkable record of his painted landscapes.

Fabrica: les yeux ouverts, the exhibition which the Pompidou Centre mounted in Paris in October 2006, starts its journey as a travelling exhibition to debut in Italy at the Milan Triennale from 5 June to 15 July 2007.
Being invited to the Milan Triennale - a major Italian design and architecture institution - is yet a further and very important accolade for Fabrica.
Davide Rampello, chairman of the Milan Triennale, said, "We have always been very interested in the products of Italian manufacturers, the true driving forces behind Italian design, and in their communication strategies, especially in the skills of the Benetton Group which invented, not least through its work with Oliviero Toscani, a new form of advertising".
The exhibition is curated by Marie-Laure Jousset, the head of the Pompidou Centre's design department.
It has a new design for its Milan sojourn though the original inspiration is preserved: a summa of Fabrica's many personalities as a place of exploration and innovation, the fruit of the industrial culture of Benetton Group.
Fabrica presents its documentary (COLORS magazine and photo reports) and experimental (media art, interactive, video, visual communication) projects integrated with new stories and the premières of many new videos.

An exhibition of new paintings and selected works - including large-scale panel pieces - by the well-known Japanese artist, Kenji Yoshida.
This will be his fourth solo show at the October Gallery.
Born in 1924, in Ikeda City (part of present-day Osaka) Yoshida studied art under the great Hayashi Kiyoshi and also Furukido, before those studies were interrupted by the war.
Selected for training as a kami-kaze pilot, Yoshida was extremely lucky to survive his teens - though the majority of his close friends were not so fortunate.
After the close of hostilities, the memory of the traumatic experience of having walked so near to death spurred Yoshida to throw himself single-mindedly into his art again, and devote himself to a sustained exploration of the life-affirming forces that he had seen so nearly extinguished.
From that point onwards the majority of his work has carried the single, most telling of all titles, "Life".
In 1964, Yoshida moved to Paris where he has lived ever since.
His quest for purity led him to prefer the fundamental forms of the square and the circle.
His research into colour led him to two essential elements, black and white.
He then introduced two materials that surpass the category of colour, gold and silver leaf.
These metals bestow on the painted surface a dimension both temporal and sublime.
