Living Modern German and Austrian Art and Design

Living Modern: German and Austrian Art and Design

Modernism was not only an innovative aesthetic recognized by its crisp forms and progressive use of materials, but Modernism was also a way of thinking about contemporary life.

Amid a backdrop of industrialization, urbanization, world war, and reconstruction, many progressive German and Austrian artists and designers dreamed of a better world.

Several common themes and aspirations emerged from this Utopian vision, but forms and subjects varied remarkably.

While some artists and designers appealed to traditional forms of representation and modes of production, others emphasized innovative expressions and technologies.

This exhibition looks at the "modernisms" that together contributed to the richness of life in Germany and Austria during a remarkable period of cultural redefinition, social transformation, and political reorganization.

More than one hundred paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, and household designs from the Smart Museum's collection represent several major artistic and design movements of the period: the Symbolism and Jugendstil aesthetics of the 1890s; the Expressionist tendencies before World War I; and the Constructivist and Bauhaus designs of the turbulent 1920s.

Max Beckmann in Amsterdam

Max Beckmann in Amsterdam

This exhibition offers the first extensive retrospective of the work produced by Max Beckmann in his years in Amsterdam.

Max Beckmann (1884-1950) was one of the leading and most distinguished German artists of the 20th century.

After the Nazis had labelled his paintings "entartete Kunst" (degenerate art), in 1937 Beckmann moved to Amsterdam, where he lived and worked until 1947.

The Van Gogh Museum shows masterpieces from this Amsterdam period, including the four impressive triptychs Carnival, Acrobats, The Actors and Perseus.

His paintings bear witness to his interest in the world of cabaret, Dutch landscape and life in Amsterdam.

Through his diary, letters, photographs and an impression of his studio, the visitor to the exhibition is given an insight to the life Beckmann lived in Amsterdam.

Impressionism

Impressionism

On April 15th, 1874, in the Parisian studio of photographer Nadar, was the opening of the first group exhibition that was uninhibited by government interference and the dictates of an official selection committee.

This date has gone down in the annals of art history because it marks the birth of the Impressionism.

Impressionistic paintings now rank among the most popular works of art and are the pride of any museum or collection worldwide.

However, in 1874 the public response to the exhibition, and to Impressionist painting, was not adoration but rather shock and even outrage.

The Impressionists and the succeeding Neo-Impressionists were avant-gardist and revolutionary, paving the way for modern art.

Present-day viewers, hardly realizing this revolutionary potential, can be content to enjoy the aesthetic of light and color.

Artists featured in detail: Frederic Bazille, Marie Braquemond, Gustave Caillebotte, Mary Cassat, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Armand Guillaumin, Max Liebermann, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Guiseppe de Nittis, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Medardo Rosso, Giovanni Segantini, John Singer Sargent, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Walter Richard Sickert, Alfred Sisley, Max Slevogt, Fritz von Uhde, Federico Zandomeneghi.

Diesel Unveils New Installation at Diesel Denim Gallery

Sydney-based artists Korban / Flaubert now present "Automatic," a custom art installation at the SoHo Diesel Denim Gallery (DDG) from May 20th through July, the latest project in an ongoing series of collaborations between Diesel and curator Sebastien Agneessens.

Korban/Flaubert is the design and production partnership founded in 1993 by metal specialist Janos Korban and architect Stefanie Flaubert.

The Australian artists are noted for their experimental furniture and lighting, and large site-specific sculptural commissions.

Their work has been exhibited in Australia, Europe, the U.S., the U.K. and Japan.

"Automatic" further explores a theme evident in Korban/Flaubert's work; the artists' fascination with complex organic growth patterns.

This installation serves as an artistic reflection on the growing global interest in bio-mimicry, the science examines organic models to create solutions to human problems.
