In Advance

In Advance

In Advance explores the concept of the readymade gesture within the context of contemporary art and broader culture.

Exploiting the slippages between sculptural and photographic practices, it looks at different forms of domestic and commercial architecture as sites of play and transgression.

Reflecting on modes of living, consumption, and signification, In Advance examines the performance of subjectivity within the realm of the everyday and the promises of a utopian future.

Stephen Birchs sculptures are fabrications of everyday things gone slightly awry.

The objects flawed appearances lend a strange vulnerability to their existence, making them appear somehow more real than the things they represent.

Alternately, Vanila Netto uses performance and photography to transform the discarded or obsolete refuse of consumption into new objects of utility.

Paul Saints brickwork sculptures also misappropriate issues of form and function.

Referencing building supports used in post-war Australian housing, his works engage with domesticity in relation to its containment within a micro-economic scale.

Geoff Kleems large-scale photographic mural explores the impact of Modernist architecture and design.

Focusing on the site of the contemporary art gallery, his work considers the gallery as an architectural support and (to misquote Le Corbusier), as a machine for exhibiting in.

Kunsthaus Zurich Shows the Marc Rich Collection

Kunsthaus Zurich Shows the Marc Rich Collection

From 20 June until 3 August 2008 Kunsthaus Zurich is showing photographs from the Marc Rich Collection.

Predominantly vintage black-and-white prints, these images trace the development of classic art photography since the late nineteenth century.

Donated by its munificent owner to the Kunsthaus in 1989 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of photography, the Marc Rich Collection forms the backbone of the museum's collection of classic art photography.

It ranges from images by the early pioneers (Henry Fox Talbot, Charles Marville) through the Pictorialism of the Photo Secession (Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen), Straight Photography (Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams), Surrealism, Constructivism and Bauhaus (Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy) to the poetic-documentary Realism of the mid-twentieth century (Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank).

This cabinet exhibition is curated by Tobia Bezzola and consists mainly of vintage prints - from the same era as the original shots.

At the same time, it is also a chance for the Kunsthaus to show important examples of classic-modernist photography that have come into the collection since 1989: items such as the group of experimental works by Herbert Bayer that was donated to the Kunsthaus thanks to the generosity of the Dr. Carlo Fleischmann Stiftung.

Rhythm and Light in Indian Dance

Rhythm and Light in Indian Dance

This flash exhibition showcases the startling photographic talent of London-based artist Vinita Agarwal in her exploration of Indian dance.

Through her multi-layered pieces which focus primarily on four styles of Indian dance: Odissi, Kathak, Bharatnatyam and Rajasthani Folk, the viewer is made aware that in no other major art form does time play such an important role as in Indian dance and music.

Agarwal breaks down dance pieces into twenty-second long exposures, in which the intricate relationship between taal and laya - the two rhythmic principles that make up the backbone of the dance - is laid bare.

By placing light sources onto the hands and feet, the delicate precision of movement is communicated: dance steps and hand gestures are mapped by trails of light to convey the time and space they occupy.

This enables viewers to get an unusual, rare and intimate picture of Indian dance.

The exhibition will run over a two day period, including private views on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th April.

Additionally there will be a talk by the artist including a unique performance by one of the Indian Kathak dancers, Indrani Datta, featured in Agarwal's work.

It is rare and exciting that an artist has observed an intricate and complex approach to dance with such telling, emotional and stunning results.

Parsons Presents 2008 MFA Fine Art Exhibition at the Kitchen

Parsons Presents 2008 MFA Fine Art Exhibition at the Kitchen

Parsons the New School for Design will present the 2008 MFA Fine Art Thesis Exhibition, on view May 1-10 at The Kitchen in Chelsea.

The show brings together drawings, paintings, videos, mixed media, installation and performance from 22 artists with diverse backgrounds, interests, and intentions.

Reflecting the range and intricacy of the present art world, the artists' individual visions promise a strong and vibrant art world in the future.

The Kitchen Gallery is free and open to the public; an opening reception will be held May 1 from 6-8 pm.

The exhibition is organized by Bill Carroll, the former director of the Elizabeth Harris and Charles Cowles galleries, through an innovative course he taught called "Theory, Practice and Career, which is required of all graduating students in the program.

The course enabled the students to play an unusually active role in its organization - securing the exhibition space, developing the catalogue, and helping to conduct its marketing and promotion.

Now in its fifth year, the course was established through a grant from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, which has bestowed grants upon only five other MFA Fine Arts programs (Columbia University; Virginia Commonwealth University; the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and CalArts).
