What Is Painting Contemporary Art from the Collection

What Is Painting? Contemporary Art from the Collection

What Is Painting? is the fourth in a series of installations drawn from the Museum's collection of contemporary art.

It presents a selection of artworks made since approximately 1965, including a number of recent acquisitions and many works displayed for the first time since the Museum's reopening.

A variety of responses to the question "What is painting?" are proposed in loose chronological sequence, ranging from ironic to sincere; from figurative to abstract; and from an embrace and creative reimagining of painting's possibilities to a critical engagement with its limits.

The installation's title derives from John Baldessari's eponymous painting of 1966-68 (with the addition of a question mark), acknowledging the ongoing debates over the practice of painting and its place within contemporary art.

British Artist Beryl Cook at The Baltic

British Artist Beryl Cook at The Baltic

British artist Beryl Cook is self-taught and is celebrated for her paintings of people going about their daily activities.

Her work pictures familiar social situations such as girls on a hen night, in a disco or shopping; men in the pub, at a strip club or at the market.

In her paintings Cook captures moments of social history, portrayed with a playful streak of naughtiness.

This exhibition will be the largest survey of Cook's work to date.

Exhibition Highlights Princeton's Pop Art Collection

An exhibition celebrating the Princeton University Art Museum's permanent collection and promised gifts of Pop art will be on view through Sunday, Aug. 12.

"Pop Art at Princeton: Permanent and Promised" highlights the museum's comprehensive collection, acquired over the last 30 years through purchases, bequests and gifts, both past and promised, of paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture by leading figures of the American Pop art movement.
ary
The exhibition also includes examples of seldom seen later works by Robert Indiana, Alex Katz, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselmann, providing a broad historical overview of Pop art as it has been practiced from the movement's origins to the present day.

The exhibition is complemented by the publication of "Pop Art: Contemporary Perspectives," the first in a new series of monographs that will offer in-depth explorations of the museum's rich collections.

"Over the last 30 years, the Princeton University Art Museum has steadily augmented, by gift and purchase, its collection of Pop material," said Susan Taylor, the museum's director.

"These generous promised gifts highlight the significance of Pop art and mark an important addition to the museum's collections in contemporart."

Jeff Wall

Jeff Wall

Jeff Wall is considered one of the most acclaimed and influential artists of his generation.

He uses state-of-the-art photographic and computer technologies to make pictures that evoke the composition, scale, and ambition of the grandest history paintings.

This exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of Wall's nearly 30-year career.

Wall uses state-of-the-art photographic and computer technology to make pictures that evoke the composition, scale, and ambition of the grandest history paintings.

His often giant color transparencies are mounted on light boxes that combine the seductive glow of a cinema screen or public advertising with the physical presence of minimalist sculpture.

Over the last three decades, Wall's intellectual rigor and critical accomplishment have aided significantly in placing photography at the very center of contemporary art discourse.

His works often have the formal clarity of documentary photography or photojournalism, yet almost all of his photographs rely on, to varying degrees, staged or constructed artifices.

Both the degree and nature of Wall's inventions vary significantly from picture to picture.

In some works, the scene has been created through the conventional manipulation of objects or individuals in real time and real space.

MOCA Focus Florian Maier-Aichen

MOCA Focus: Florian Maier-Aichen

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) continues its MOCA Focus series, a major initiative to showcase the work of emerging artists in Southern California, with an exhibition featuring Los Angeles-based artist Florian Maier-Aichen.

MOCA Focus: Florian Maier-Aichen will be on view at MOCA Pacific Design Center June 28 through September 30, 2007.

Organized by MOCA Assistant Curator Rebecca Morse, MOCA Focus: Florian Maier-Aichen focuses on the artist's photographic portrayal of the natural, industrial, and cultural landscape.

He creates expansive, haunting vistas-landscapes devoid of humans, but visibly touched by mankind-bathed in an ethereal, almost otherworldly light.

Since its debut in 2005, the MOCA Focus series has featured challenging new works and diverse practices, including sculpture, installation, photography, painting, new media, and experimental video.

In addition to being the first solo museum exhibition for the artist, each exhibition will be documented by the artist's first monographic catalogue, including images of the artist's works and a major scholarly essay by the exhibition curator.
