Everything I Do Always Comes Back to Me

Everything I Do Always Comes Back to Me

School of Visual Arts presents "Everything I Do Always Comes Back to Me," an exhibition of work by SVA faculty and alumni commenting on conflict, compassion and the Buddhist ethic.

Curated by legendary designer Milton Glaser, this exhibition complements the theme of "The Missing Peace," which brings together artists' personal interpretations of and reflections on the Dalai Lama's philosophies and ideals.

"Everything I Do Always Comes Back to Me" includes photography, painting, sculpture, digital art, cartooning and 3D and graphic design.

Over 25 artists - including fine artists Julian LaVerdiere, who created Towers of Light, Suzanne Anker and Jake Berthot, and designers James Victore, Kevin O'Callaghan and Stefan Sagmeister - address a wide range of subjects, including war, terrorism, nature and environmental concerns, and hope for a better future.

Together they comment both on topical and existential issues and speak to the need to take responsibility for our own actions.

SAIC Alumnus Joshua Mosley at Venice Biennale

SAIC Alumnus Joshua Mosley at Venice Biennale

Joshua Mosley, an alumnus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is presently showing his digital art work, dread, at the Venice Biennale's 52nd International Art Exhibition.

He was selected to show in the Padiglione Italia at the Giardini by the Biennale's first director from the United States, Robert Storr.

Storr, also an alumnus of the School of the Art Institute (MFA 1978), served as a senior curator in the Museum of Modern Art.

Mosley is represented by Chicago dealer Donald Young, who is showing his work at Art Basel, which opened June 12.

Mosley studied Painting and Drawing, Art and Technology, and Film and Video at SAIC.

"Josh Mosley was always an innovator, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in animation," says Carol Becker, Dean of Faculty at SAIC.

"The School curriculum fit his needs because he wanted to work across disciplines; he found faculty who supported him with a mixture of technical, philosophical, and theoretical knowledge.

The School gave him permission to be an artist, an intellectual, and a technology wizard all at once, allowing him to combine forms and levels of reality, without feeling he had to choose between them."

All events are aimed equally at professional photographers, photography specialists, students, as well as at interested amateurs and photography lovers.

Focus: Periphery - A European Cross-Country Project - The new Europe is being decided in the peripheries.

Lines Grids Stains Words

Lines, Grids, Stains, Words

Lines, Grids, Stains, Words presents drawings from the 1960s to the present that conflate the simple and seemingly impersonal formal and compositional vocabularies of Minimal art with references to the physical and the bodily.

Concerned with issues of scale and perception rather than content, Minimal art often utilizes industrial fabrication techniques and materials, and its hallmark compositional strategies include straight lines and geometric forms organized in rows, grids, and sequences.

But Minimal art's relation to the body, while ever present in the medium of sculpture, is often difficult to discern in studies, sketches, and other related works on paper.

This exhibition traces the ways in which remnants of the physical can be found in Minimalist works on paper, beginning in the early 1960s, when the formal conventions were defined and tested, and follows the applications of these vocabularies in reference to the body through the present day.
