Peter Fischli and David Weiss Flowers Questions

Peter Fischli and David Weiss: Flowers & Questions

This is the first UK retrospective to explore the collaborative art practice of Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss.

Since the late 1970s the artists have consistently captivated and amused audiences with their extraordinary transformations of the commonplace.

Fischli and Weiss work across a wide range of media and this exhibition presents their sculpture, installation, moving image and photography.

Underlying all of their work is a childlike spirit of discovery which encourages the viewer to look afresh at their surroundings.

In Fischli and Weiss's world everyday objects take on an unexpectedly lifelike quality; they balance on each other, play off each other and collide into one another with a witty intelligence infused by the artists.

Displayed works include a history of the world told through the medium of hand-modelled clay figures and a multiple slide projection installation which asks hundreds of big and small philosophical questions such as "Will happiness find me?"

Visitors also have the chance to see two outstanding films.

The Right Way 1983, features the artists, dressed in rat and bear costumes, scaling Alpine slopes and crossing rivers as they seek the right way.

Mark Sladen Appointed as ICA Director of Exhibitions

Mark Sladen Appointed as ICA Director of Exhibitions

The ICA announced that Mark Sladen has been appointed as the new full time Director of Exhibitions.

In Sladen, the ICA has selected one of Britain's leading curators to develop a bold, imaginative exhibition programme for its future.

Mark Sladen comes to the ICA from the Barbican Art Gallery in London where he is currently Senior Curator and has been responsible for such notable shows as The Americans (2001-02), Witness (2003), Helen Chadwick (2004) and Folk Archive (2005).

Sladen has consistently supported artists at breakthrough points in their careers, and has also been a champion of photography and design.

His exhibitions at the Barbican in 2006 included an ambitious commission from the Argentinian artist-architect Tomas Saraceno, as well as In the Face of History, a major survey of European documentary photography in the 20th century, co-curated with Kate Bush.

This year Sladen has also been responsible for Momentum, a biennial of contemporary art held in Norway, featuring the work of 31 artists from Northern Europe and co-curated with Annette Kierulf.

Reality Bites Making Avant-garde Art in Post-Wall Germany

Reality Bites: Making Avant-garde Art in Post-Wall Germany

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, Germany has reemerged as a potent intellectual and creative center within the international art world.

In February 2007, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis will present Reality Bites: Making Avant-garde Art in Post-Wall Germany, the first thematic museum exhibition to examine how contemporary artists have dealt - both directly and indirectly - with the social, economic and political ramifications of German unification.

Reality Bites is conceived and organized by Sabine Eckmann, Ph.D., director and chief curator of the Kemper Art Museum.

It is also the first major loan show in the museum's new facilities, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki, which were dedicated in October 2006.

In all, Reality Bites will feature approximately 70 artworks created since 1989, by both German artists and international figures living in Germany.

The vast majority of the artworks have never been exhibited in the United States.

They range from video and photography to sculpture, installation, assemblage and new media art.

Three Imaginary Worlds

Three Imaginary Worlds

Three Imaginary Worlds is a contemporary art exhibition promoted by the Trevi town council.

Three young artists who have established a deep relationship with the Umbrian region will be showing some of their latest works.

Following the lines of its previous engagements, the town administration is investing again in high-profile cultural initiatives, giving attention to young artists and to experimental contemporary languages.

This confirms a trend well established through the years, and at the same time implies and reaffirms a precise intention to implement and develop a principle of large-scale territorial cooperation, so to activate - and bring to the fore - the manyfold resources of the Umbrian territory.

It is for this reason, then, that both Umbrian Provinces - Terni and Perugia - participate in this project at many different levels.

This exhibition, that takes place in the halls of the historical Palazzo Lucarini in Trevi, can be seen as three distinct one-man shows presented side by side.

Each artist worked separately on an assigned surface, giving birth to a site-specific project well attuned to the characteristics of each given space and developed according to his or her own very personal point of observation.

Faces of New York Simon Hoegsberg

Faces of New York: Simon Hoegsberg

Once in a while we see a person in the street who immediately attracts our attention.

We are fascinated by the appearance of the person and feel a strong urge to walk over and say hi.

Simon Hoegsberg spent one month, seven hours a day, walking the streets of New York in search for people who had this effect on him.

He found ten, and asked each of them the same question: What do you think about your face?
