Interact with Large Speech Bubbles

Interact with Large Speech Bubbles

Using "always on" technology, cell phones with SMS messaging allow an audience to interact with large speech bubbles projected onto a flat surface, like the facade of a building.

The bubbles are positioned near windows and doors to encourage an audience to create the conversations happening inside.

The Big Picture

The Big Picture

When artist Eugene James Martin died in 2005, his wife, Suzanne Fredericq, decided that something had to be done.

Martin was an accomplished painter, with his own brand of abstraction drawing on African American themes, an oeuvre spanning some five decades and works in important collections throughout the south -- but he had done little to promote himself during his life.

This was what brought her to Artnet's new Artists' Works Catalogues.

The service creates an online resource for researchers, collectors and art enthusiasts hoping to get a grasp on the scope of a career, as well as a powerful promotional tool for select artists, explains project coordinator Maya Shikhman.

Debuted in November 2005, the project now has 38 active catalogues, from important historical figures like Mary Cassatt to vital mid-career artists such as Rachel Whiteread -- with additional catalogues in the works on new media pioneers like Janet Cardiff, cutting-edge painters like Kehinde Wiley and avant-garde photographers like Vik Muniz.

While not designed to replace a catalogue raisonné, Artnet's new Artists' Works Catalogues take advantage of the dynamic nature of the web, providing a living resource that can be updated fluidly as a career progresses or as new historical facts become available.

The launch time for a catalogue varies depending on

All Allure

All Allure

Erotic art dates back to ancient times and has continued to be a subject of artistic expression throughout history.

Today, the presence and overexposure of nude bodies on the Internet and television have influenced and changed the definition and very notion of erotic imagery.

The featured work in All Allure expands on the classical definition and world of erotic motifs and displays a contemporary approach on erotic visual culture by showcasing works from graphic design, fashion illustration, photography and performance art.

The captivating works collected in this book are the best indication of the trend of eroticism outside the mainstream.

The sexy, romantic, seductive, provocative, sensual and sometimes naďve charm of these images is surprising, fresh and original.

All Allure is not only a source of inspiration for creatives and designers but also a unique documentation of a new era of erotic art.

Transitional Objects Contemporary Still Life

Transitional Objects: Contemporary Still Life

Curated by Dede Young, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Transitional Objects: Contemporary Still Life is a thematic exhibition, presenting art by more than 20 artists that will examine still life as a genre recast in recent years, layered with new heroic, social, political, personal and psychological meaning.

The exhibition will place together objects made since 1990, including painting, sculpture, installation/tableau , by artists who push the traditional, fixed meaning of still life beyond historic roots and the pop culture focus on consumerism.

Selected works reflect shifting cultural values regarding: affluence, ecological pollution, homelessness, sexuality, endangered mental health, and spiritual and moral decline.

In addition to engaging discussions about these issues, the exhibition will show the ongoing role of painting.
