The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) presents Allan Kaprow- Art as Life, the first major retrospective of Allan Kaprow (1927-2006), one of the most influential artists of the postwar era.
On view at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA March 23, 2008-June 30, 2008, the exhibition is a thought-provoking examination of a prolific and innovative career that spanned more than 50 years.
Beginning with figurative paintings from the late 1940s, the exhibition traces the development of Kaprow's oeuvre through works from the mid-1950s which he called Action Collages and eventually led to the creation of all-encompassing Environments.
Integral to the exhibition are reinventions of Kaprow's unprecedented Happenings of the late 1950s to mid-1960s in which events replaced objects as the focus of the artwork and the spectator played a pivotal role in the realization of the work.
Having held faculty positions at the California Institute of the Arts and the University of California, San Diego, Kaprow had a particularly strong connection to the Southern California contemporary art scene and a profound impact on his students.

Back by popular demand, Muse Art and Design will once again host a two-day Sumi painting workshop, led by master Sumi painter Yuming Zhu.
Literally translated to black ink painting, Sumi uses an economy of brush strokes aiming to depict the spirit, rather than the semblance of an object.
Based in Seattle, Zhu comes to Portland to share the principles of Sumi at his two-day workshop entitled Sumi and Soul.
The weekend course will be held March 28-29, 2008 at The MuseRoom at 4136 SE Hawthorne Blvd.

Some artists have always functioned beyond the "isms" of art history, following personal and unique paths, sometimes shaped by biography, but just as often informed by devotion to a specific subject matter, medium, or technique.
Glossolalia: Languages of Drawing, featuring selected works from MoMA's drawings collection, reveals the underlying and unexpected links between the works of a diverse group of artists.
Ultimately, the exhibition suggests that even amidst iconoclasm, isolation, or the pursuit of invented worlds and obsessions, shared methods can lead to a common visual language.

An arresting visualization will stop us in our tracks.
A revealing visualization will show us more the longer we look at it.
But a winning visualization will do all of that... and help us learn something new as well.
Create a science or engineering visualization that addresses all three of these elements and you could be one of this year's recipients of the International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge awards.
The 2008 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the journal Science, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
Awards categories include: Photographs / Pictures, Illustrations / Drawings, Informational / Explanatory Graphics, Interactive Media, and Non-Interactive Media.
Winning entries will be published in a special section of the September 26, 2008 issue of the journal Science and Science Online and on NSF's website.
One winning entry will appear on the front cover of Science.
