Bellevue Arts Museum officials say they are on track to reopen the museum in late spring, after an 18-month closure and a makeover of both the building and its artistic mission.
But a date has not been set and all the necessary funding is not in place, said Michael Monroe, the museum's executive director and chief curator.
So far, about $1.8 million has been raised, but Monroe says an additional $1 million is needed in order to open the doors. "We're out looking for more funding in order to secure the opening," he said. "We're anticipating an announcement soon."
The museum received an anonymous challenge grant of $500,000 three weeks ago, Monroe said. If officials raise $1 million, they'll get the money.
The reopening already has been delayed twice because of a lack of funding, once last summer and then again in October.
The museum's doors were closed in September 2003 amid a financial and artistic crisis: The museum was running out of money and faced low attendance after moving to a new $23 million building in downtown Bellevue in 2001. The closure angered some patrons and former donors and bred public distrust about the museum's financial management.
Since then, Monroe, who started in July and is the former curator-in-charge at the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery, has been working to repair

This will be the first ever presentation of modern glass from the Czech Republic and Slovakia in any Dutch museum.
Thanks to the loan of a major private collection, the Gemeentemuseum is now in a position to reveal the skill and sophistication with which glass artists in these two countries exploit the optical effects of glass in their sculptures.
The exhibition will be designed by the internationally renowned designer Václav Cigler (1929), who is regarded as the founding father of this school of glass art.

From the beauty of endangered animals to the destruction of natural disasters, nature has many sides that a photographer can capture. The true legends in this field respect nature's awesome power while working to share its vast beauty with the rest of the world.
It is the secret behind the success of one of the world's most respected nature photographers, James Balog.
This April, NikonNet's inspiring monthly, "Legends Behind the Lens," honors the work of esteemed nature photographer James Balog.
Recently, Balog was presented with an opportunity to photograph the unbridled power of nature and its effects. A month after the infamous tsunamis struck the islands of Indonesia in December 2004, Balog arrived in Banda Aceh, one of the hardest hit areas in Southeast Asia. He spent a week in Banda Aceh, taking photographs and helping with recovery efforts.
"There were pictures everywhere I'd turn," he says. "Visually it was intense, a barrage of impressions. I couldn't stop photographing. Then at night I'd grit my teeth and cringe. I knew it was so visually rich because of so much sadness and horror. I was thinking, there are pictures everywhere, but look at what I'm photographing." Balog photographed not only the devastation, but also the work of body recovery teams, at times assisting them.
