Kutlug Ataman Captivating Strangers

Kutlug Ataman: Captivating Strangers

Turkish artist Kutlug Ataman creates videos in which people reveal their psychological fixations, social grievances, and artistic or spiritual quandaries. His astute installations place the viewer squarely in the midst of these absorbing lives.

These are good days for Kutlug Ataman, a 43-year-old Turkish artist who divides his time between Istanbul, London and elsewhere. He has a new video installation in the Carnegie International, for which he won the Carnegie Prize; he was a finalist for Great Britain's prestigious Turner Prize; he recently presented another impressive video piece at Lehmann Maupin in New York; and he is also preparing for a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney later this year. That's not bad for someone who wasn't even exhibiting visual art per se until 1997, although he had been making experimental and feature films for a while, oftentimes to considerable acclaim.

Ataman and the conceptually minded sculptor Ayse Erkmen are now broadly recognized as the two premier contemporary Turkish artists; like Erkmen, Ataman is one of the few Turkish artists in recent memory to enjoy a robust international reputation. Most of his career, however, has transpired far from his home country, due to the fact that, aside from the acclaimed Istanbul Biennial, Turkey has not developed an arts infr

Blind at the Museum at Berkeley Art Museum

Blind at the Museum at Berkeley Art Museum

The University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) presents Blind at the Museum, an exhibition on view in the museum's Theater Gallery through July 24, 2005. Guest curated by Katherine Sherwood, Professor of Art Practice at U.C. Berkeley, and Beth Dungan, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Medicine, the Humanities, and Law, Blind at the Museum investigates the nature of blindness and the "visual arts" in works by numerous artists who probe the limits of optical experience.

An art museum would seem to be no place for the blind, as co-curators Sherwood and Dungan remind us. "Yet art objects address many sensory mechanisms - touch, hearing, scent, taste - and thus offer an opportunity to reconsider the process of 'viewing' or responding to art. Visual artists are often thinking about the very nature of vision: What does it mean to 'see'? ... And what are the limits, or the liabilities, of the gaze?"

Blind at the Museum explores visual experience in works by Sophie Calle, a French artist known for her series on blindness; sculptor Robert Morris; multimedia artists Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Joseph Grigely; photographers John Dugdale and Alice Wingwall, and others. The artists in the exhibition address the nature of visual experience from a variety of perspectives: some emphasize so

Terra Nova Sculpture Vessels in Clay

Terra Nova, Sculpture & Vessels in Clay

The Museum of Arts & Design presents Terra Nova, Sculpture & Vessels in Clay, through April 3, 2005. This selection of important works in ceramics highlights the achievements of international masters, both established and emerging, that have entered the Museum of Arts & Design's distinguished collection since the Millennium. The exhibition will present works by 26 artists from Canada , China , Japan , The Netherlands, Sweden , Taiwan and the United States . Many of the works are exhibited at the Museum for the first time.

The artists illustrated at left demonstrate the range of styles included. Marilyn Levine's Anne's Jacket (1990) demonstrates her mastery of the art of trompe l'oeil , replicating every detail of the garment - from its folds to the marks, scratches, and signs of wear - as it hangs on a wall peg. Swedish artist Eva Hild experiments with positive/negative space in her delicately pierced stoneware Complex 1 (2004).

The rich heritage of the ceramic tradition serves as inspiration for many artists. Michelle Erikson's Pair of Tulip Pagodas (2002) incorporate fanciful juxtapositions of past styles and techniques, including the rich, fluid patterns of English slip and iconography from ancient Chinese porcelain. Famous for her photographic self portraits, Cindy Sherman, in her Madame Pompadour Breakfast Service

NikonNet and Legends Behind the Lens Honor Steve Vaccariello

NikonNet and 'Legends Behind the Lens' Honor Steve Vaccariello

There are photographers who are defined by the lengths they go to in order to create the perfect shot. Then there are those who allow simplicity to take the best pictures. Legendary photographer Steve Vaccariello falls into that latter category with a career that echoes one of his own statements, "Photography isn't what I do. It's what I am."

This February, NikonNet's inspiring monthly, "Legends Behind the Lens," honors the work of award-winning commercial and fine-art photographer Steve Vaccariello. He has photographed some of the most recognizable images in national advertising campaigns for Sprint PCS, Ritz Carlton Hotels, Sure deodorant, Finlandia vodka, MasterCard, Nikon, and many others.

"NikonNet is pleased to honor the images and extraordinary career of Steve Vaccariello in this February's 'Legends Behind the Lens,'" said Tracy Mack- Jackson, senior manager of Internet Development and Programs at Nikon Inc. "Whether shooting for commercial projects or a best-selling book, he is an exceptionally versatile photographer who is able to make images that are both simple and memorable, time and time again."

It's this simplicity that sets Vaccariello apart. While he has been internationally acclaimed for his commercial and fine-arts work, Vaccariello has also made a name as an excellent travel photographer. He often tr
