Guggenheim Examines Art And Life of the Aztecs

Guggenheim Examines Art And Life of the Aztecs

This fall the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum examines the extraordinary civilization of the Aztecs through more than 440 works drawn from public and private collections, including archaeological finds of the last decade never before seen outside Mexico. The Aztec Empire is the most comprehensive survey of the art and culture of the Aztecs ever assembled, and the first major exhibition devoted to the subject in the U.S. in more than 20 years.

The Aztec Empire is organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in collaboration with the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA) and the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH). Guest curator is Felipe Solís Olguín, Director of the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City, co-curator of the large-scale survey Aztecs at the Royal Academy in London in 2003, and one of the world's foremost authorities on Aztec art and culture. Exhibition design is by Enrique Norten of TEN Arquitectos + J. Meejin Yoon.

The Aztec Empire begins by painting a vivid and immediately recognizable portrait of daily life in a thriving metropolis and seat of power. In an early section sculptures in stone or fired clay and stucco depict the appearance of an urbane people in an ascendant society in a variety of poses, whether standing, seated, kneeling, crouching, holding a caca

University of Michigan Master of Urban Design Program Uses Film to Show International Spatial Relationships

University of Michigan Master of Urban Design Program Uses Film to Show International Spatial Relationships

In a people-oriented discipline such as urban design, it is essential to familiarize designers with the relationships between human activity and urban form. University of Michigan's Master of Urban Design Program uses the medium of film to enable students to observe and compare these relationships across an international array of cities and cultures.

In the program's introductory studio, Urban Design Studio I, students view narrative films set in cities in the United States, South America, Europe, North Africa and Asia. The films depict a diverse range of settings -- some with a long tradition of architecture, history, and culture, and others that are modern, fast-paced commercial centers -- often reflecting the experience of the program's students, who come from around the world. Each film is followed by a discussion. Together, students and the instructor examine the background elements of the film's story and cinematography, and analyze themes such as space, landscape, skyline and traffic as they relate to the film's plot and character development. Lessons learned from the films are then applied to studio design projects. Students create project storyboards similar to those made by filmmakers to help visualize their work, and use them to clarify design intentions as they portray the projects in an accessible and compelling

French Musician Jean Michel Jarre to Kick Off French Culture Year

French Musician Jean Michel Jarre to Kick Off French Culture Year

A concert by French musician Jean Michel Jarre at the front gate of the Forbidden City will kick off the French Culture Year in China, Sunday, said a spokesperson of the municipal government of Beijing.

More than 15,000 people are expected to attend, said the spokesperson.

People can also enjoy the concert through screen walls at Xidan, Wangfujing and Zhengyangmen, three downtown commercial or scenic areas.

During the performance, Jarre is expected to ride to Zhengyangmen by motorcycle, an ancient city gate of Beijing south of the Tiananmen Square, to entertain the audience there.

Wang said the performance by a famous Western artist in front of the Meridian Gate, a quintessential piece of classical Chinese architecture, is hoped to bring the ancient oriental culture of China and French art into close contact.

Alain Lombard, commissioner general of the French Culture Year, said that the performance should help Chinese people better understand France and French culture.

Jarre held a concert in Beijing in 1981. He was the first Western musician to play in China after the country shifted to a reform and opening-up policy in the late 1970s.
