Boolean Memory Sculpture at QV Melbourne

Boolean Memory Sculpture at QV Melbourne

In response to the brief of "Memories" for Melbourne Fashion Festival's 2006 RAW (Retail Art Walk), Melbourne designer Soren Luckins of Büro North transformed an empty retail space at Melbourne's QV with an imposing 5x2metre, hot pink "Boolean Memory" sculpture.

In a collaboration with Steve Phillips and Andrew Thompson, the team drew on ideas stemming from youthful recollections, capturing the inexplicable way childhood memories can morph into an ethereal, blurry, enigmatic, singular vision or recollection of youth.

Developed from a process using 3D computer modeling and traditional construction methods the pink sculpture incorporates the imagery of a skull, a pair of trainers and a coke can, all prominent icons from the designer's youth.

When booleaned together (3D talk for morphing into one shape), the 3 forms merge to create a large, imposing sculpture that represents both the clarity and unresolved confusion of memories.

"we wanted to create something that would contrast with the concrete empty space at QV and reference how memories often blend clarity and unresolved confusion, creating a singular memory of a series of objects or events"
