Malaysian Furniture Design Competition 2005
More than 150 students from local universities and colleges are expected to participate in Malaysian Furniture Design Competition 2005 from today to August 30.
The competition is being organised by the Malaysia Furniture Entrepreneur Association (MFEA) and the School of Arts of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
MFEA president Cha Hoo Peng said the competition was aimed to discover talented furniture designers among students and to increase awareness on the importance of furniture design among Malaysians.
The competition, with the theme "Modern, Elegant and Comfortable Furniture", involves six categories, namely living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen, office and outdoor furniture.
Cha said cash prizes worth over RM9,500 will be presented to the winners. The first prize consists of a study tour to Cologne, Germany, apart from RM2,000 cash.
USM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said the continuous growth of the furniture industry had earned foreign exchange and created job oppurtunities.
"Malaysia is now one of the world's top 10 exporters of furniture, with RM6.3 billion worth of local furniture export as of last year," he said.
He said there was a need for Malaysia to facilitate the transition from a sub-contracting nation to a design and made in Malaysia furniture.
