Arts Council England Launches National Young Carnival Designer Award
Arts Council England in partnership with Camden Council Arts & Tourism is launching a national Youth Carnival Designer Award as part of the youth programme for the international On Route Carnival Conference taking place this October.
Young people from across the country will be asked to design costumes representing a carnival king, queen, prince or princess and 12 winners will receive prizes up to the value of £1000. The awards will be announced at a Mask and Mas Ball on 18 October as part of the conference and the winners' work will be transformed into 5ft x 3ft banners which will decorate the On Route venue, the Camden Centre, during the conference. The artwork will also be exhibited in The Swiss Cottage Central Library.
The On Route Carnival Conference is the first international carnival conference in Europe. It will bring together carnival practitioners from all over the world for three days of debate and discussion. The aim of the conference is to raise the profile of carnival arts by highlighting new developments and encouraging national and international networking opportunities. The event will be coordinated by Camden Council's Arts and Tourism Service.
Earlier this month, the Arts Council published its National Carnival Arts Strategy which set out how the Arts Council will support the cultural, artistic and professional development of carnival arts in the near future. The strategy aims to provide the carnival arts sector with the same awareness of and access to funding as other artforms and to act as an advocacy tool for the increased recognition of carnival as an artform.
