Architecture Internet Award 2005
In 2005 BauNetz, Autodesk and Hewlett-Packard are announcing the seventh Architecture Internet Award
The computer has liberated the world of architecture. Yesterday's visions are a built reality today. First there was the box. Then there was folding, and eventually the blob was born. But what comes next?
In view of the Architecture Internet Award 2005, BauNetz, Autodesk and Hewlett-Packard postulate that the future is in the variability of architecture. The task consists in developing a spatial scenario which is based on the principle of demand-controlled adaptation.
This year will be the seventh time the Architecture Internet Award is initiated. The total prize sum is worth 15,000 euros.
What does your building or your city structure respond to? To traffic flows or streams of visitors? To its resident's phases of life? To wind and weather? Turn upside what is at the bottom or turn outside what is inside. Visualize the heartbeat of a city. Your visions of variable architecture are in demand!
Will there be buildings that respond to the user and independently alternate according to the streams of visitors, to their user's phases of life, to climate and lighting conditions? Such possibilities are to be demonstrated on the basis of a direct example. The participants choose an existing built-up area - from residential buildings to urban fabric - and design a scenario of its utilization based on variability.
The task consists in presenting a visionary concept on the future of architecture. At the same time, the participants are asked to ....illustratively describe a built-up location in its decisive properties and potentials; ...describe a utilization concept that can be architecturally put on this location. The existing building development has to be integrated into this concept, whether in parts or entirely. The new buildings can be juxtaposed or put above or below the existing building stock. It is also possible to fully integrate the new elements into the existing development and to write up an antagonism like work-repose, movement-statics, bright-dark, top-bottom etc. ...implement a spatial scenario for this location based on the principle of demand-controlled adaptation. New and innovative material concepts can be part of the concept. Changes of use, whether in a textual or quantitative context, can be conceived as influential factors for the transformation. For instance, dimension and shape of the spatial shell, internal spatial limitations or the surface texture can be reshaped.
Your contribution will inspire the jury by its - visionary power, since this is not a realization competition! Everything is possible... - courage, since you leave the beaten paths and question conventions; - consistency, since you demonstrate a reproducable path from your place of departure into the future.
The jury will consist of: Matthias Sauerbruch, Sauerbruch/Hutton, Berlin Jan or Tim Edler, realities:united (BIX facade Kunsthaus Graz), Berlin Christiane Fath, framework Gallery, Berlin Peter Richter, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Berlin Alexander Rieck, Fraunhofer IAO, Stuttgart Michael Nachtsheim, Autodesk GmbH, München
The competition is not anonymous. It is open to anyone - individuals and teams - interested in architecture, multimedia and design. Legal entities, e.g. companies or institutes, may only participate if all the authors are mentioned by name. The authors are individually entitled to any prizes awarded.
Registrations to enter the competition can be submitted (without obligation) immediately on the competition website http://www.BauNetz.de/internetpreis under the heading "Anmeldung".
Final Deadline for Submitting Entries: 17 October 2005
Jury: November 2005
Prize Awards: The prizes will be awarded in February 2006
Submitting Entries Entrants are expected to submit a digital presentation that complies with the standards of the World Wide Web. Presentations must be designed so that they can be transported via the Internet and read with a standard browser. Only plug-ins that are available free of charge on the Web are to be used for this purpose.
The participants can choose between two different procedures for submitting their presentations: 1. Hosting at BauNetz (recommended) You can upload your presentation via permanent FTP access onto a web server provided by BauNetz. Using this method enables you to check at any time if your presentation is executable on the internet and to simulate later access on part of the jury. 2. Internet You place your presentation into the World Wide Web on any web server and simply put a starting page onto the BauNetz server.
Regardless of the submission method you choose, you are kindly asked to a.s.a.p. register noncommittingly under "Anmeldung" so that the initiator can plan the necessary technical capacities and keep you well informed.
Author's Declaration, Deadline for Submitting Entries For registrations to be binding, entrants must submit a separate author's declaration by surface mail (final postmark deadline: 17 October 2005). Entrants must use the printable form prepared for this purpose. It is available in PDF format on the competition website http://www.BauNetz.de/internetpreis under the heading "Teilnahmebedingungen".
Copyright With their registration, the entrants consent to their entries being published, without receiving compensation, by the sponsors BauNetz, Autodesk and Hewlett-Packard and by the press in reports on the awards. The authors of published entries will be mentioned by name. With their registration, entrants also assure the sponsors that their entries are not, in whole or in part, subject to copyright claims by third parties. This applies, in particular, to illustrative material included in entries. The entrant shall be liable for any claims asserted by third parties that may arise as a result of any such publication.
