2005 Chicago Sustainable Design Challenge
Paper or Plastic or...?
The image of a discarded plastic bag washed up on shore or sliding along an empty street powerfully depicts humanity's insensitivity toward the next 500 years of that bags existence.
Grocery bags are one of the most ubiquitous yet subtle products to regularly affect people's lives all over the world everyday. More than 500 million plastic bags will be consumed this year in the U.S. alone, with more than 1 trillion used worldwide.
How many generations will see that same bag floating along? How long can the ambivalence last? Now you have the opportunity to turn the grocery bag into a symbol for hope and renewal. The implications are profound and far-reaching.
Design a system that alleviates the destruction wrought by the disposable grocery bag and the world will notice.
Designers are hereby challenged to devise a new system for Chicago, one that addresses the problem from the perspective of:
--policy, --education/communication/advocacy, and --product design.
Can your design be the topic of conversation in homes across the city? Can your ingenuity spread beyond the city limits to other states, or other countries?
The alternative must be appealing economically, environmentally and socially to be truly sustainable.
After challenging the design community, the Foresight Design Initiative will in turn challenge itself over the coming year to implement proposed solutions from among the submitted ideas.
Shock the current system into change and your idea could spread like wildfire.
Registration deadline: Friday, September 9, 2005 Submission deadline: Friday, September 16, 2005 Download the registration form: http://www.foresightdesign.org/challenge/c...enge_packet.pdf (256K PDF)
