iF Product Design Award 2006
"Design, not marketing" - this was the slogan of the jury for the iF product design award 2006 competition, which proceeded to award a coveted iF seal of design excellence to 688 products overall. The student-based competition entitled "iF concept award product" resulted in awards for 20 students, accompanied by the jury's appeal to design more with their heads, and less with their computers.
1,952 products entered from 37 different nations were up for examination during the three-day judging session at the Hannover Exhibition Center, and the experts had plenty to talk about. The jurors judged products in twelve different categories, including the packaging/globe packaging award, staged in close cooperation with the German Packaging Museum in Heidelberg, with the following results: 688 products received an iF seal of excellence. The winners of the iF gold awards, the 50 "design Oscars", will not be announced until the official awards ceremony on March 9 at CeBIT 2006.
The student-based iF concept award product also achieved a new record: 639 registrations from students across the globe, representing 33 nations, offered a broad spectrum of all product-relevant categories. 20 young design talents were the recipient of an iF concept award product and will be waiting with bated breath to see how the prize money of EUR 10,000, sponsored by Dyson, is going to be distributed. The answer to this question will likewise first be unveiled at the awards ceremony at CeBIT.
The jury and its decisions
iF product design award 2006
Chaired by Fritz Frenkler (f/p design, Frankfurt and Kyoto), the jury brought together the following experts, who judged the products based on an extensive set of established criteria: Per Börjesson (Electrolux/Home Products Italy S.P.A., Italy), Christoph Böninger (designafairs GmbH, Munich), Dr. Heinrich Ganseforth (Hannover), Stefano Giovannoni (Giovannoni Design srl, Milan), Ehlén Johansson (MEJK Design, Malmö), Dr. Bernhard E. Kallup (Sedus Stoll AG, Waldshut), Erik Magnussen (Erik Magnussen Design A/S, Copenhagen), Carl G. Magnusson (Knoll International, USA), Achim Nagel (TWO design, Cologne), Dr. Carl Olsmats (World Packaging Organization, Stockholm), Takao Oosawa (Hitachi, Design Division, Japan), Dick Powell (Seymorpowell, London), Aziz Sariyer (Derin, Turkey), Peter Jochen Schott (Schott Relations GmbH/Markenwerke AG, Stuttgart/Moderation packaging/globe packaging award), Dr. Alexander Schubert (Enterprise IG, Hamburg), Robert Suk (Rosenthal AG, Selb), Peter Thonet (Gebrüder Thonet GmbH, Frankenberg/Eder), Takao Watanabe (Toyo Kitchen & Living, Japan) and Prof. Kurt Weidemann (Stuttgart).
In the words of Chairman Fritz Frenkler: "It would be a good thing for design to reclaim its actual area of expertise. Increasingly, marketing is taking over from design and calling the shots. This will be the downfall of enterprises." The essence of the jury's demands could be summed up in the phrase "Design, not marketing." And Carl G. Magnusson added the comment: "Good design should actually be normal."
iF concept award product 2006
The jury for the iF concept award product 2006 competition was composed of Peter Gammack (dyson Ltd., Malmesbury/UK), Prof. Winfried Scheuer (State Academy of Art and Design, Stuttgart) and Prof. Martin Topel (Bergische Universität Wuppertal/Industrial Design). The jurors reported seeing many high-level concepts and ideas. "We saw many drafts that help advance the cause of design," reported the jury, adding: "The products submitted are very international and are all on a similarly high plane. The global competition involving high-quality products in the marketplace is reflected in the iF concept award product." The jurors explicitly encouraged students to rely less on computer-generated models, and more on fleshing out the technical details of their own ideas first, before going on to the rendering stage.
