ispo BrandNew Award Winners Announced
The Jury of the largest start-up competition in the sports industry has chosen the winners of the 13th ispo BrandNew Awards.
18 judges, international sports experts, went through 171 participating companies from 25 countries. They viewed, examined and tested all products and were amazed by the high quality of the entries.
Here are the winners of ispo BrandNew winter 06:
Overall Winner: North Legion from Norway

SMX is the ideal winter alternative for all bikers. Regardless of whether you are a mountain biker, BMX or FMX fan, all two-wheel tricks are possible on the slopes. The jury of the ispo BrandNew Awards also agreed that this new winter sport tool is interesting for a much bigger target group and that snowboarders and skiers, for example, could also get a lot of fun out of the SMX.
The SMX looks like a tricycle, but with three stable short skis instead of wheels and a very stable, high-tech look. Turns and tricks are not a problem thanks to the flexible frame, and you can stop faster than with a snowboard, according to the manufacturer. The designers made sure you could use every kind of ski lift with it without problems for getting up mountains conveniently. If you are thrown off the saddle during risky maneuvers, you need not say goodbye forever to your SMX; a safety stopper makes sure that it stops close to the crash spot.
Jury member Nurhan Nalbant from ADVANSA was very impressed: "North Legion SMX - a combination of elements from BMX and FMX for an exciting new winter sport. This is a fantastic alternative to snowboarding. I can really imagine that mountain biking in snow will become a new trend thanks to SMX. We have already seen many snowbikes, but this is completely different." http://www.northlegion.com
Hardware Winter: Icelantic Boards from the US

Icelantic makes skis for free-riders, free-skiers and new schoolers. The new brand does not bet so much on length, but rather surface area and an ideal ratio of the complete dimensions. For example, a 143 cm Icelantic ski has the same surface area and the same properties as a competitor's 185 cm ski, but weighs considerably less and is easier to maneuver. Icelantic wants to shake up the long-established principles of the ski industry with its concept and very extraordinary shapes. It provides a two-year guarantee for its skis.
The design of the ski is a mixture of art with a Scandinavian touch and extraordinary graffiti. Icelantic uses the best materials currently available on the market, and each model is convincing thanks to the excellent craftsmanship, with which it is made. Wolfgang Greiner, Ski Press Europe publisher & editor and ispo_news editor: "Icelantic is a very young and fresh ski company with a new approach in ski geometry: the terrain is more important than the discussion about the length of a ski. They are motivated and offer surprisingly short and wide ski shapes for freeskiing and slopestyle that work. A true winner since they are motivated, different and also because they offer a serious product without taking themselves too seriously." http://www.icelanticboards.com
Style: Tyra Clothing from Hungary

This streetwear label from Hungary provides multifunctional clothing for women and men. The pieces are real eye-catchers before, during and after participation in sports. The collection's design is very convincing; it has been implemented down to the tiniest details. Tyra Clothing provides sport freaks and couch potatoes with clothing, in which they feel comfortable but do not look as if they were wearing a potato sack. Tyra Clothing has succeeded in combining style and function masterfully while staying its own course.
Jury member Reinhard Pascher, Pascher+Heinz GmbH SportsMarketing: "The jury was amazed by the authentic approach of the Hungarian newcomer. Tyros streetstyle is based on clear color schemes with strong graphics and interesting applications. The asymmetric cuts and selected materials are a strong tribute to sports style." http://www.tyraclothing.com
Sportswear: StrideLite from the US

Few people are able to practice their favorite sport outside in winter before the sun goes down. But it is very important to remain visible in the dark to avoid accidents. StrideLite is certainly one of the best "illumination systems" currently available. The company provides multifunctional jackets and belts, into which electronic "illuminated strips" are worked. The small battery cases are integrated cleverly into the pockets and do not interfere during running, bicycling or whatever else you want to do while wearing the jacket.
The system is not only stylish, but power- saving. The jackets are available in various color combinations for every taste, and they also fit perfectly. Oliver Bertram from Lifestyle Magazine Men's Health and new ispo BrandNew jury member: "The StrideLite jacket is a real eye- catcher with its integrated stroboscope light sources and provides optimum safety during jogging or cycling during the dark times of the year. The concept of the flexible illuminated strips is convincing; they provide light that is visible from a good distance without blinding the wearer. They also have optimum workmanship and do not restrict movement at all. StrideLite is a good functional jacket and well-deserved winner in the sportswear category thanks to its extra portion of safety." http://www.stridelite.com
Sportswear Accessories: CZiP from the US

People involved in winter sports know the dilemma: You have to take off your gloves for certain things, but it is not always easy or safe to do, especially on a lift, in the middle of a ski slope or backcountry. CZiP Glove puts an end to this problem. Thanks to a zipper on the back of the hand, you can simply fold open the glove fingers. You can open a ski boot, take a handkerchief out of your jacket or take a snapshot. The glove remains secure on your hand, you can't lose it, and you can put your hand back into the warm glove just as quickly.
The material of CZiP Glove dries rapidly, and you can choose between mittens and gloves. You not only save a lot of time thanks to the CZiP Glove, but the system is also very practical, safe and can save you lots of money under certain conditions, because you can no longer lose your gloves or leave them somewhere.
Michael Stephan, Managing Director of Karstadt Sport AG: "The CZiP Glove deserves first place in this category thanks to its orientation to actual practice. Everybody knows the situation; you are sitting on a lift and your nose is running. You take off your glove, hold it under your arm, look for your handkerchief, and suddenly its time to get off the lift, you get agitated and your nose is still running - the glove is gone! The glove fits perfectly with respect to style and material blend and is of high quality." http://www.VaughnOutdoor.com
Accessories: Tubeline from Germany

The idea of taking old materials and giving them life with a new design has been around for quite awhile, but nobody had thought of bicycle tires until now. Tubeline makes stylish bags made of old bicycle tubes. The products range from ladies' handbags (admittedly not very traditional) and carrier bags to laptop bags; it will certainly be expanded. For all those who want to have a small souvenir from their favorite cycling pro, Tubeline provides a special service: Upon request, bags are made from tires, which the pros used during their races. For example, you can have an individual bag made from the tires, with which "Ete" Zabel won the six-day race in Munich.
Tobias Hatje, Editor of Fit for Fun magazine and BrandNew jury member, said about Tubeline: "It's a great idea to turn old bicycle tires into bags. In the past, recycling of sports materials was only know from sailing, where the material was fashioned for bags or jackets. Each bag is unique, and I like that. I also like the idea of having a bag, which was made from the original tires and tubes, which Jan Ulrich rode on in the time trials at the last Tour de France, for example. The idea behind the bags really has potential." http://www.tubeline.de
Hardware Summer: Banshee Riverboards from the US

A few might already be familiar with the scenario, because surfing addicts already made rivers and creeks rideable with similar systems contrived ad hoc years ago. Banshee Riverboards now offers a unique, complete riverboard set composed of a board and a specially developed, safe bungee rope system. Surfers that don't live near the ocean or where there are waves in a river, can finally practice their favorite sport near their homes.
You can surf upstream or stay in the same spot against the current at a speed of 45 km/h - and you can do it without a boat. Banshee Riverboarding is easy to learn and simple to handle, i.e., the perfect way to learn surfing or finally the equipment, which lets you use the long lean periods between surfing vacations meaningfully.
Long-standing member of the jury, Managing Director of m2b Michael Plank, believes that "The idea of transferring a wave-feeling to the Isar in Munich with elastic bands, ropes and a wooden board is already very old. But Banshee Riverboards has succeeded with this custom-made solution in creating a professional sports device that works for the first time, and consequently many wave & surf freaks can convert their river into an attractive surfing spot." http://www.bansheeriverboards.com
Hardware Accessories: Mantis from Germany

Whoever believes that he has everything that golf has to offer will now learn a new lesson. The Carbon Golf Caddy is now available for all golf addicts and design freaks. The caddy convinced the BrandNew jury not only thanks to its innovative design, with which it has already won the Red Dot Design Award this year, but it also fulfills all desires with respect to function.
The exquisite parts might not fit into the small trunk of a sports car, but certainly will fit in every lifestyle station wagon or SUV, typical vehicles for virtually every golf household. In spite of the slight weight, the Carbon Golf Caddy also has an electric motor with forward and reverse gears. Consequently, whoever has not succeeded in impressing his fellow players with his handicap will certainly succeed with the Mantis. Robert Schroots from Riri was impressed: "Mantis shows us that a sports device, which has an excellent design but is still functional, can be something for everybody. Mantis is the best designed golf caddy that I have ever seen." http://www.carbonfunctions.de
