Genesis: AIA Chicago Design Competition

Overview This is a two stage ideas competition. In the first stage entrants will be asked to provide conceptual design proposals that meet the stated mission and requirements of AIA Chicago. These submissions will be judged and 5 finalists will be awarded. In Stage 2, finalists will meet with AIA officials to discuss the requirements and expectations of stage 2, and will then be judged based on them and their teams' professional qualifications to execute the proposed design. A winner will be selected and will be presented with the opportunity to negotiate a contract with AIA Chicago and to execute their design.
Eligibility Students and /or professionals of architecture who have been registered for less than 10 years. As this competition desires to build the winning design entrants are strongly encouraged, but not required, to team with a licensed architect. See the "Rights and Ownership" section for more specific details regarding the execution of the design
Membership in the AIA is not required to participate in this competition.
Mission Statement (Vision) AIA Chicago is undergoing an ideas competition to solicit designs for a new office. While the location and space have not yet been selected, the new office has the potential to accomplish several key goals of the chapter. Among these are, creating a more inviting space for member interaction, creating a space that is more accessible and visible to the public in order to strengthen our connection with the community, and designing a space that reflects who we are and what we do as a profession.
Meeting spatial program criteria, budget constraints, and incorporating technological and sustainable design features are critical to the quantitative aspects of the design solution. In addition, a successful architectural outcome will respond to the qualitative criteria of usefulness to the members, staff well being and interaction, access and visibility to the public and members, comfort, safety and security of all occupants and visitors to AIA.
Other stated goals of this competition are to support students, yet to be licensed and newly licensed professionals, to aide in selecting an architect of record for the office, and to speed delivery of documents and build-out of the space by year's end. All of these criteria will be used to judge and award a winner of the competition.
Competition entrants are encouraged to explore new ideas about the chapter office and how its design informs the way AIA Chicago operates.
Registration ends on June 1, 2006.
