School of the Art Institute of Chicago's 2007 Graduate Exhibition
Opening May 5 at Gallery 2 and Project Space (847 W. Jackson Blvd.), the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's 2007 graduate exhibition and reading event features work by the next generation of artists, designers, and writers. More than 150 students completing master's degrees exhibit their work in art and technology studies; ceramics; fiber and material studies; film, video, and new media; interior architecture; painting and drawing; performance; photography; printmaking; sculpture; visual communications; and writing.
On May 8 in the SAIC Ballroom (112 S. Michigan Ave.) graduating students in the MFA Writing Program will read selections from their theses. The evening includes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, scenes from plays, and works that defy genre.
At the Gene Siskel Film Center (164 N. State St.) on May 11 and 12, students working in the time arts will show in the Graduate and Undergraduate Film, Video, and Audio Presentations. The two-day festival will feature thesis projects including live-action shorts, animation, feature-length narrative and non-fiction works, and experimental digital and audio pieces.
Students completing degrees in Performance will present their thesis work on April 21, 22, 28, and 29 in the SAIC Performance Space (280 S. Columbus Dr.). These special presentations blur the boundaries between theater, movement, and the visual arts.
To complement this year's graduate exhibition, SAIC will feature a filmed Critic's Roundtable with Jerry Saltz, Terry Myers, and Jim Yood, representing seasoned opinions from the East Coast, West Coast, and Midwest. The three critics will discuss developments in contemporary art and their views on the work of SAIC's graduating master's students. The Critic's Roundtable will be available to the public via a video podcast posted on the School's website in early May.
