The London Design Festival
15-30 September, 2005
The London Design Festival was established in 2003 as an annual international event to celebrate and promote London and the UK's creativity. By dedicating the last two weeks in September to design a diverse range of individuals and organisations are able to come together, celebrate the creative diversity of London, discover new ideas, make new connections, and most importantly, have fun.
Partners stage events and activities all over town. These events are eclectic - they might be serious seminars or exhibitions, film screenings, competitions and awards, receptions and even the odd party. They bring together people with a range of interests from lifestyle to urban regeneration to trends to digital special effects.
Over forty partners representing over twenty different disciplines supported the first festival in 2003, which we estimated directly reached 100,000 people. The opening reception was hosted by the Museum of London and was addressed by Estelle Morris, then Minister for the Arts. A succession of high profile events followed, all of which were listed in the official guide, published by Time Out.
Launched with a grand reception attended by 1,000 people in the British Museum addressed by the Deputy Prime Minister, the 2004 Festival was twice the size of the first. Over 70 events took place including collaborations that came about thanks to the previous festival including the 26 Letters exhibition and book. The Festival came to a climax with a party for 2,000 people at the Victoria & Albert Museum. A full listing of all the 2004 events is on the site.
Planning for the 2005 Festival (15-30 September) is well under way, make sure you're part of it!
Building on the success of the 2004 Festival, which saw 150,000 people at over 70 exhibitions, events, seminars, screenings, lectures, and parties all over London, this year's programme will continue to grow as September draws ever nearer.
The programme for the London Design Festival 2005 is still growing. Details provided here are confirmed events and activities. Over the next few months the list of events will get bigger as partners confirm their plans, providing a fully searchable service for Festival visitors.
