Kunst- und Wunderkammer: Curiosities in the University's Collections
This exhibition aims to provoke thought on collecting practices and their role in the formation of the modern museum. How did the museum come about? Approaching the museum's collection historically, Kunst - und Wunderkammer examines the diverse collections at the University of Kansas with an emphasis on the major collections donated by Sallie Casey Thayer, Lewis Lindsay Dyche, and Francis Huntington Snow. Collaborating with the nine divisions of the Natural History Museum & Biodiversity Center, the Anthropology and Archeology Research Center, and the Spencer Research Library, Kunst - und Wunderkammer links the kunst curios in the Spencer Museum of Art with the wunder curios of other university collections to create a KU cabinet of curiosities. The material within the cabinet ranges from artworks and literature to historical wonders such as natural specimens and anthropological finds. With an emphasis on KU, this exhibition addresses the history of the University's collection and aims to engage thought on new directions of collecting. What is the future of the modern museum?
The exhibition will take place between June 17 and Fall 2006.
