Making of Shrek and Shark Tales Exhibition
From fantasy epics to superhero action films, computer graphics have become a vital part of moviemaking today. An exhibition in Seoul shows how two recent feature animations from Hollywood were made.
The exhibition, titled "Welcome to 3D Animation's World," is being held at Kookmin University's Zeroone Design Center in Taehangno, Seoul, through Feb. 6. On display are film stills, character sketches and documentaries on the making of the popular "Shrek" series and "Shark Tales."
The show details various aspects of making a computer animation from its beginnings as scribbles on a drawing board to the final product on the big screen.
The section "Making Image Zone" is the most detailed of the sections, giving specific information about special effects, including 3D character rendering and image coloring. It includes a demonstration of the "4D Shrek" technique, which is being made public in Korea for the first time.
The section also shows how famous celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas and Mike Myers in "Shrek" as well as Martin Scorsese and Will Smith in "Shark Tales" were used as a basis for characters in the respective animations.
"Making Sound Zone" shows the dubbing process of animation as well as presents music videos from the two animation films. The section includes video demonstrations of how sound effects were made and interviews with the celebrity voice actors behind the films.
"The Photo Zone" gives visitors an opportunity to take a souvenir photo with the animation characters of the films.
The exhibit also includes programs for children to experience the development process of animation firsthand. Young visitors can try dubbing their voices to animation characters' or draw and make characters themselves.
Tickets cost 3,000 won for children and 4,000 won for adults. The center is located near exit 1 of Hyehwa Station on subway line 4.
