ACADIA 2007: Art, Cities, Environment

On October 1st to 7th, 2007, Dalhousie University School of Architecture and NSCAD University will host the world's leading experts in architecture, interactive systems and digital tools at the ACADIA 2007: Expanding Bodies international conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Presented by the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) and the Canadian Design Research Network (CDRN), the conference focuses on "expanding physical boundaries and bodies of knowledge". Leading architects, engineers, artists, planners and researchers will explore the ways in which digital sensing, interactive, and responsive systems can open up new possibilities in art, architecture, and urban design.
The event will feature international and local exhibitions, symposia, competition awards, and keynote lectures by world-renown speakers such as Kevin Hydes, Chair of the World Green Building Council, and Roy Ascott, founding president of the Planetary Collegium at the University of Plymouth.
The CDRN will kick off the event with three days of interactive workshops. "Activated Ceramics" will explore the fusion of innovative digital technologies with the traditional craft of ceramics and masonry. The "Sustainable Cities" workshop will bring together designers, environmental experts, and municipal officials in redeveloping a Halifax city site with sustainable urban design principles and advanced digital visualization tools.
The workshops reflect the CDRN's multidisciplinary design expertise, fusing the network's five research themes - sustainability, advanced design and interactive technologies, visualization, and fabrication.
The annual ACADIA conference and the publication of its proceedings are a major communication channel among experts in the field of computer-aided design in architecture. The conference site moves each year, providing members the opportunity to see facilities at schools of architecture around the country. This year's chosen location is the newly completed NSCAD University Port Campus, situated on the city's thriving historic harborfront.
The CDRN is a national network of researchers, conducting innovative, cutting-edge research in design. The organization brings together academic institutions, government agencies and industrial partners across Canada, providing a vehicle for generating and sharing knowledge through conferences, workshops, seminars, and publications.
ACADIA was formed with the purpose of facilitating communication and critical thinking regarding the use of computers in architecture, planning and building science. A particular focus is education, as well as a commitment to the research and development of computer aides that enhance design creativity and contribute to the construction of humane physical environments.
