Leo A Daly Project Wins NAIOP's Best Biotech Office for 2007

The Washington, D.C. office of international architecture, planning, engineering and interior design firm, LEO A DALY has been recognized with an award from the Maryland/DC chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP).
The regional Maryland/DC chapter has awarded The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) "Best Biotech Office" as part of the organization's Fifth Annual Awards of Excellence program held at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel on May 3, 2007. LEO A DALY provided full architectural, master planning and interior design services for TIGR, a four-story, 122,000-square-foot laboratory and office facility located on a genetic research campus in Rockville, Md.
A central addition to the existing J. Craig Venter Institute research campus TIGR is evocative of the Prairie Style - a uniquely indigenous American architectural style popularized by Louis H. Sullivan and his contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright in the earlier part of the 20th century. Inspiration for the overall design came from the owners' admiration for Wright's architectural style, which is evident in the site's other existing structures.
LEO A DALY designers created highly functional spaces that facilitate communication among researchers and staff and provide a high-tech setting that reflects the nature of the advanced genomic research conducted within. An ever-present reminder and a major focal point, the massive glass curtainwall is interspersed with alternating bands of tinted and clear glass in subtle hues of pink, blue, yellow, and green, which evoke the dyes used to identify various amino acids, the fundamental building-blocks of DNA and genome sequencing.

Since occupying the completed building, the teams of researchers at TIGR have been responsible for sequencing and analyzing more than 50 microbial genomes and some of the most important model organisms. A new sequencing of one complete human genome set will be published in early summer 2007. More recently the institute launched an ocean sampling expedition which has uncovered more than six million new genes and thousands of new protein families from organisms found in sea water. Teams have sequenced the microbial flora found in the oral cavity and human gut, and have generated a synthetic version of a virus that attacks bacteria, all part of an ongoing quest to create a fully synthetic chromosome and organism.
