Velocity Presents an Exhibit of Isamu Noguchi
Velocity is excited to celebrate the Isamu Noguchi exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum with a concurrent show featuring furniture, lighting, and accessories designed by Noguchi and available for purchase.
Produced in collaboration with Vitra and the Noguchi Museum, the exhibit will highlight the ways in which Noguchi sought to make sculpture useful in everyday life through his designs for interiors.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Noguchi created home furnishings that reflected the biomorphic imagery of his contemporary sculpture. After his death in 1988, his influence continues to impact modern design, and his furnishings -- most notably the Free Form sofa and the Akari lighting -- have never been more popular.
Velocity's installation will illustrate that these museum-worthy designs are also timeless, functional, and beautiful additions to today's interiors.
About Isamu Noguchi Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) is one of the most celebrated sculptors of the 20th century. His lifetime of work intersected some of the major cultural figures of our century, in fields ranging from sculpture and architecture to dance and design.
His works traverses the boundaries between fine art and applied art, Western modernism and Japanese aesthetic, and the natural and industrial worlds. As a sculptor and designer, it was space that most engaged Noguchi, and he created a broadened conception of sculpture as the creation of lived space. He sought to explore the space of human experience in the lived environment through all of his works, which include monuments, memorials, gardens, fountains, landscape architecture, furniture, and interior design.
Noguchi has a strong presence in public works in the Northwest, including Black Sun (1970) at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, Landscape of Time (1975) at the Federal Building, and Sky Viewing (1972) at Western Washington University.
