1st Avenue Machine Announces the Arrival of a Very SpecialGuest
Specialguest is a New Creative Studio Based in New York
In a dark room filled with the buzz and flicker of an old lamp, a man's suit sits in an arm chair, starched and unworn.
Suddenly, the suit begins to grow a body made from yarn. Wiggling toes and tapping fingers give life to the otherwise motionless suit. Out of the suit's breast pocket, a short clip of red yarn peeks out inching its way up to the head like a worm. It disappears into the head then sprouts into many colored yarn pieces.
The yarn body then takes off his suit and enters a world inside of his briefcase where he finds love with a colorful yarn creature.
Welcome the SpecialGuest, a new short film being released this week by the just-launched studio of the same name. Created by Director Aaron Duffy, with sound design by Fabio Fonda, the short is the first of many charmingly quirky pieces from the studio.
SpecialGuest is a new creative animation studio born of the same minds that created 1st Ave Machine. This time, they teamed up with Aaron Duffy to create a completely new aesthetic.
"We wanted to create a platform that would allow for a lot of exploration and experimentation on techniques," says Duffy who loves to use different unexpected materials in his work. "Using interesting materials is great because you can really push the sense of texture. We're excited to play around with different media to push the boundaries of traditional animation to enhance the storytelling of a spot. We really want to surprise people."
Aaron Duffy went to school at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He currently lives in Brooklyn where he spends his time imagining and creating.
SpecialGuest uses a variety of stop-motion and animation techniques to create fun, cute, amusing spots that are clever and thoughtful yet endearingly odd and simple. The new studio is currently working on a music video for Telephone Jim Jesus of Anticon Records.
