Andreas Linzner
once upon a time there was a towel....made by Andreas Linzner
Originally from Pforzheim, the idea for the instruction as a men's tailor was settled very early in AL's (age-class 1969) mind. As a teenager he already didn't like the material and cuts of the common clothes, so it was his grandma's turn to help him - she gave him the first entry to tailoring. This first step was followed by an instruction as men's tailor at the Nuremberg Opera followed by the study of textile art at the Nuremberg Academy of Modern Arts and Fashiondesign in Hamburg.
After moving to Hamburg AL's marked interest in the emotional factor of special fabrics enflamed his love to Terry. After several exercises and studies with the fluffy material in 2001 the first forms for pets and accessories appeared and are still part of his basic collection. The funny uniques made of original material from the 50's, 60's and 70's quickly caused the interest of people with a sense for style and the particular. Even the Lifestyle-Press was impressed and helped at last to bring AL's "Atelier für Frottier" into life. Lovers about this towel fabric lived all over the world and booked AL`s recycling Design. The "Atelier für Frottier" is today located in the most hip shopping mall in Hamburg's Karoviertel, the Marktstr 6. A new Trade Mark was born.
AL's love to Terry began on the flea-market. He soon developed a mania for his Sunday visits on the flea - market to look for original Terry towels. Not every visit was crowned by a success but good findings kept the designer heart beating higher.
AL still loves to scrutinize closely every towel to see the turn of the loop. How does the towel feel like, in which condition is it? The particularity of the towels is on one hand the diversity of the pattern and colours and on the other hand the different loops.
But the consideration continues: Which product can be made of this towel? Only this full emotional engagement it is possible to develop what at last are AL's products: a real design work created by love in the detail.
The emotional material Terry has inspired AL so deep, that he first created pictures and collages - which then led with their combinations of pattern and fabric to the first AL forming collection made in Germany. The first forms are animals.
Therefore AL first proofs every piece of Terry for his colour, pattern and quality then he brings the current plain in his optimum form. Design and size of the raw material develop the form of the product. This can be a small rabbit, a slim giraffe or a curvaceous elephant.
All AL fabrics and products are cut with greatest accuracy and love, so that the pattern meet again at the seam or make a sense for the form of the animals. Now Andreas Linzner formed his own towelling collections.
Since centuries Terry accompanies mans everyday life. The fabric has its original in the Middle East and was first worked in Mai 1851 in England and 1856 in Germany on looms. In the beginning the production was limited for hand and bath towels. Their main claim was the stronger water capacity compared to the towels commonly used and the softer touch. These attributes are the particularity of all Terry material.
The British Royal Family who got some Terry towels as a present was inspired and ordered some dozens. Since then Terry achieved the attribute "royal".
The particular in Terry is the loom, which through a every time new arrangement and condition in connection with colour, print or embroidery allows an unlimited variety of pattern. Weather Fuller-Terry, Twisted-Terry, Malipol or Velour-Terry no other fabric allows so many working varieties and feels so soft and fluffy.
The history of Terry is well demonstrated in the Saxony Terry Museum in Großschoenau. The beginnings of the museum go back to 1905; they show old, valuable Damask fabrics as well as the history of the Damask and Terry waving. At functional looms you can see how these large-scale fabrics are produced.
