NATO Headquarters by SOM
The political world has changed dramatically in recent years from one of limits, boundries and territories, to a more interactive, spatial fabric of fields, waves and zones. This has led to a major rexamination of NATO's primary mission. In this ever changing world the role of NATO has been re-defined from one of opposition and prevention, to one of unification and integration.
SOM's Competition winning design will include 172,000 sm of offices, conferencing and recreational facilities, which will be used for the accommodation of the 26 member countries. The ongoing building is located in Brussels, Belgium. The concept is a fold, like a loom, weaving and mingling diversity into a unique, three dimensional spatial organisation, the resultant dynamic structure is one that is both symbolic and functional, signifying unity, stregnth and transparency.
