The winners of the first-ever Translations in Tupperware global design contest were announced yesterday at MILK Gallery in New York City. Entries from the United States, Greece, Brazil, and Indonesia took top prizes and form the centerpiece of an exhibit that features more than 30 pieces of Tupperware- inspired artwork, from delicately designed purses and dresses, to seven-foot high Indian Gods and panoramic city landscapes. The exhibit is now open to the public each day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., admission free, until December 11, before heading on a global tour in early 2006.
The four winning pieces were selected from more than 1,000 worldwide entries by a panel of influencers and taste makers from the design media and industry, and were announced by Rick Goings, Chairman and CEO of Tupperware Brands Corporation: "We commend all the finalists on their amazing skill and the unique vision that went into creating these pieces of Tupperware-inspired art. This exhibit perfectly reflects the Tupperware philosophy of creating products that are not only practical and functional, but that are beautifully designed."
Tony Meredith from San Francisco was named the US winner, with a beautifully lit and shot photograph entitled Tupper Rose Window which uses multi-colored and multi-textured, vintage and contemporary Tupperware tumblers top replicate a stained-glass window. The Latin American winning entry by Maria do Carmo Pinheiro Sinigagalia of Brazil features a colorful and practical clown-shaped kids' trunk made from one of Tupperware's top selling products, a Thatsa Bowl. Greece's Georgia Papanikou, the Europe/Middle East regional winner, created a 10 foot-wide sculpture entitled Hellenic Obstinacy, which depicts a typical Grecian woman dragging a donkey full of wares. And finally, Mrs. Masniah of Indonesia, the Asia Pacific winner, created a wedding dress made from 500 tumblers, inspired by their colors, shapes, and textures.
The Translations in Tupperware global design contest was launched in May 2005 and invited consumers and designers from around the world to create a piece of art or unique functional product using Tupperware products as the basis for their inspiration. The prize package for the four top entrants includes a trip for two to New York City, a $5,000 cash prize, and inclusion of their work in the global tour.
The judging panel included Mariska Hargitay, actress; John-Michael Ekeblad, former Tupperware Chief-Designer; Carl Magnusson, Executive Vice President, Director of Design for Knoll Design; Linda O'Keeffe, Director of Design and Architecture for Metropolitan Home magazine; Laetitia Wolff, Senior Design Editor for Surface magazine and Founding Director of futureflair; international industrial designer Satyendra Pakhale, George M. Beylerian, founder of Material ConneXion; and Professor Dr. Peter Zec, President of Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen (DZNRW), the organization that runs the acclaimed red dot awards program in Germany.
The Tupperware name symbolizes eminently practical and beautiful design. In 2005, a survey by HFN Magazine ranked Tupperware the most recognizable name in the food storage category in the United States. In 2003, Good Housekeeping magazine awarded the Stuffable Storage Containers their coveted "Good Buy" Award in 2004 and again in 2004 for FlatOut! Containers. Additionally, the products have won design awards in the United States, Europe and Japan. In 2001, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum awarded Tupperware the "National Design Award for Corporate Achievement" in recognition of its outstanding design.
