Droog@home Presents Fashion Design: Conny Groenewegen
Droog Design has invited fashion designer Conny Groenewegen to wrap up its gallery droog@home from 25 January to 12 February 2006. The exhibition presents exclusively new work of Groenewegen and is related to the half-yearly fashion event Amsterdam International Fashion Week. Herewith Conny Groenewegen launches her first fashion collection.
Conny Groenewegen is considered to be one of the most important young talents in the Dutch fashion world. In November 2004 she presented her necklace collection in Amsterdam, followed by a presentation of accessories and garments in September 2005.
After finishing the fashion academy, Conny Groenewegen (NL, 1971) continued her education at the academy of arts, where she combined elements of fashion, 3d visual arts and mixed media. In her design she looks for the boundaries of fashion and other design disciplines. Her new collection Rupture has a clear graphic signature and her designs relate to sculpture. The base of her designs is formed by incisions and holes interacting with the material. Cut-aways are used constructively and they shape the material. In Groenewegens design, the tactile qualities of the material are a point of departure and she plays with the idea of layers. The fine leather she uses in her designs tempts one to touch it and the notches create the impression of looking through a skin, which makes her designs sensual as well as abstract. With the references to well-known fashion designs and suggestive forms that set you on the wrong track, her designs do not lack any humour. Not everything is what it seems to be...
On Friday 27 January 2006, the exhibition in droog@home will be officially opened with a fashion show of Groenewegens Fall/Winter 2006 collection 'Rupture'. The New York based artist Skooby Laposky was inspired by the collection to compose a new piece of music, which will be presented in a performance during the fashion show. Admission to the fashion show uniquely by invitation.
