2006 Michelin Challenge Design Display
Student Entries Join 36 International Works in 2006 Michelin Challenge Design Display
Four seniors from the Transportation Department at the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit are getting the exhibition opportunity of a lifetime January 8-22, 2006 when their work joins international vehicle designs from 19 countries selected for the Michelin Challenge Design display at the 2006 North American International Auto Show.
For the last five years, the CCS competition theme has mirrored Michelin's global design competition, Michelin Challenge Design. This year the competition was based on vehicle designs the students could realistically envision driving in California in the year 2015 and included a tire and wheel assembly based on one of four Michelin technologies: PAX System, Tweel, Airless or Active Wheel assemblies.
The four CCS students received a total of six awards:
Marc Reisen (Cincinnati, Ohio) - 1st place winner in Vehicle Design and Tire & Wheel Concept Everard Scott (Cleveland, Ohio) - 2nd place winner in Vehicle Design Giancarlo Viganego (Milwaukee, Wisc.) - 2nd place winner in Tire & Wheel Concept Sang Hoon Shin (Seoul, Korea) - 3rd place winner in Vehicle Design and Tire & Wheel Concept
Michelin presented the first-place winners with $1,250 scholarships. Second-place winners received $1,000 scholarships, and third-place winners earned $750 scholarships. The tire company made a donation to the school's Carl Olsen Scholarship fund that provides financial aid to CCS students based on need and merit.
Judges for the CCS event included top vehicle designers Brian Nielander from DaimlerChrysler; Ford's Chris Metros and GM Performance Division Design Director, Kip Wasenko. Automotive experts Jeff Dworin, Car and Driver magazine art director, and Mark Mehall from Ford Advance Technology were also judges. Nielander and Metros are CCS graduates.
"At Michelin, we look at creativity, innovation and advancing design in everything we do," said Tom Chubb, vice president of marketing for Michelin Automotive Industry Division. "We want to encourage young designers to challenge every barrier, limit or premise. Sponsoring programs like the CCS student competition and Michelin Challenge Design let us do just that."
Michelin Challenge Design was launched in 2001 as a way to showcase creativity and innovation in vehicle design on a global scale around a central theme. Each year, Michelin invites designers around the world, from individuals to small and large companies, to create and display significant design work that would normally not have an opportunity to be shown at a major auto show.
