Krista Charles Wins The DWR Champagne Chair Contest
The DWR's annual Champagne Chair Contest was, once again, an effervescent success. Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to create and send in entries.
"The 600-plus submissions poured in from countries all over the world, including New Zealand, Ecuador, Croatia and Malaysia, as well as from 42 states. Our panel of judges included David Meckel, the director of research and planning at the California College of the Arts, designer Michael Vanderbyl, landscape architect Topher Delany, DWR's own creative director, Jennifer Morla and myself" says Rob Forbes, Founder of DWR.
The number of entries was staggering, especially when measured by the piles of shipping boxes that resulted from the contest. The overwhelming volume of entries caused Michael Vanderbyl to remark, "I have one thought: Don't these people work?" Selecting the finalists is always a daunting task, as we had to look closely at the studies to appreciate their details and intricacy. The grand prize winner, however, was a unanimous choice. It is the year of the cork, and Krista Charles of Indianapolis led the pack with her Patrick Chair.
Consisting of one cork, sliced with a jeweler's saw, Charles was "amazed at how quickly the character of the cork led to my design." Topher Delany understood that immediately, commenting that "the chair seems to come from the essence of the cork." Nice work.
The other five winners were, starting with second place, Tom Prabowo of Dallas, Texas; Andrea Garner of Columbus, Ohio; Hector Sánchez of Chicago, Illinois; Alison Brummer of Van Nuys, California and Adam Lesser of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
