OMA to Design Campus Building for Cornell University
Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), has signed with Cornell University in Ithaca, New York (USA) to design the new Millstein Hall.
The new building will be used by the College of Architecture Art and Planning and will accommodate classrooms, studio's and office spaces for each of the college's departments. It will also offer a major lecture hall as well as a boardroom.
OMA's design will enable integration with an already excisting building, which, in previous design concepts, had been earmarked for demolition.
Cornell chose to work with OMA because 'they are particularly innovative in the use of program and its relation to the design of space. The firm's expertise aligned with an understanding of the future goals of the project and ability to best marry all necessary elements together for the new Milstein Hall.'
Joshua Prince-Ramus, OMA partner and head of its office in New York will lead the design team together with Rem Koolhaas. They previously led the project team for the Seattle Public Library and are currently working on the new Center for Information Science and Technology at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
The project budget for Cornell's Milstein Hall are estimated at $34 million.
Both a private university and the land-grant institution of New York State, Cornell University is the most educationally diverse member of the Ivy League. On the Ithaca campus alone nearly 20,000 students represent every American state and 120 countries.
