Winning Projects: CHAN CHAN 2006

2006 chan chan 1st prize

ARQUITECTUM announced the winning projects of the "CHAN CHAN 2006" International Architecture Contest.

ARQUITECTUM is the first International Agency dedicated to organize the best competitions in the best places of the world. Our mission is to promote excellence in design and architectural creativity, giving exposure to architects interested in these kinds of objectives. Our vision not only includes the organization of private architectural projects but also that of International Idea Competitions that stimulate architects to speculate and to create with the least amount of restrictions possible, in the most enigmatic, unique and beautiful settings around the world.

That's why the "CHAN CHAN 2006" competition took the same ideas of our past competition: "MACHU PICCHU 2004" and NAZCA 2005 but using a new more dynamic, efficient and easier to manage format so that all interested architects were be able to develop, and get to us, their ideas, within a more user friendly and simpler environment.

The convocatory for the contest was made in September 2005. The contest started that year in October and registrations were closed in January. The due date to present the digital projects in Peru was January 27, 2006. The last evaluation was carried out on February 15, and the announcement of the winning projects on February 28, 2006.

ARCHITECTUM 's initiative to organize this contest of ideas first appeared from the necessity of celebrating such an important site as The Chan Chan Citadel, through the construction of a Beach Lodge; a new style of accommodations which - differing of the classic folkloric resort or theme hotel - would "celebrate" the natural scenario more than "distract" with its own facilities.

The architecture was supposed to be a part of the sea scenario; a friendly Citadel company, more than an obstacle that could, in any way, difficult the phenomenological experience.

The proposal had to present an up-dated and accurate image that represented the actual spirit of the present times, but taking into consideration the usual economics of resources and the most suitable materials. It also had to signify the lowest physical investment possible.

Furthermore, the project needed to include issues such as an ecological conscience, as well as respect for the landscape and the environment.

Summarizing, the specific objective of the contest was the following:

- Gather the best architectonic ideas which, involving respect and celebration of a site, were able to mimic their presence within and kindly and gentle geographical reality.

Therefore, we believe discussion is now open for ideas regarding the current architectonic parameters on landscape intangibility, as well as on the intervention of cultural patrimonies, historical monuments or ecological sanctuaries all over the world."
