Carlos Saldanha Will Headline Promax BDA Latinoamerica Conference
Furthering its quest to deliver international members a rich, fascinating and meaningful conference experience, Promax/BDA has confirmed Carlos Saldanha as a keynote speaker for Promax/BDA Latinoamerica. Saldanha is the Brazilian-born director of the hit animated feature "Ice Age: The Meltdown," which had a record spring opening in North and South America this week.
Held April 24-25 at the Hilton Buenos Aires, the 2006 Promax/BDA Latinoamerica Conference will focus on marketing, promotion and design for electronic media in the Spanish-speaking world. Two days of sessions and retrospectives will bring attendees insights from some of the region's best minds as well as examples of the best work created this year. Additionally, the conference will feature a closing ceremony to honor winners of the Promax/BDA Latinoamerica Awards.
"We are honored at the opportunity to welcome such a dynamic and respected director as Carlos Saldanha," said Jim Chabin, Promax/BDA President and CEO. "With several blockbusters to his credit, Carlos has his fingers on the pulse of popular culture and what it takes to truly reach the masses. Our members will benefit from his vision and experience."
In addition to his recent hit, Saldanha was co-director of the 2005 animated hit "Robots." Before that, he co-directed the first animated "Ice Age" film. He has been part of Blue Sky Studios' creative team since 1993, after finishing his animated short film "Time for Love," which was screened at animation festivals around the world. Saldanha was Blue Sky's supervising animator for the talking and dancing roaches in the feature film "Joe's Apartment" (1996). He was also the director of animation for the computer-generated characters in "A Simple Wish" (1997) and "Fight Club" (1999).
Saldanha has won several awards, including the People's Choice Award at Images du Futur in Montreal and Best Artistic Film at the International Computer Film Festival in Geneva, Switzerland. Saldanha was also nominated for an Academy Award for directing the animated short film "Gone Nutty," which features "Ice Age's" much put-upon Scrat character.
In addition to feature projects, Saldanha has directed and animated a number of television commercials. "Big Deal" - a spot for Bell Atlantic - won numerous awards including a 1997 Bronze Clio. In 1999, he won a Gold Clio for the animation on "Re-Incarnated" - a Tennents Beer commercial for its 1998 Soccer World Cup campaign in Europe.
Saldanha is a native of Rio de Janiero, Brazil and earned an M.F.A. degree in animation from the School of Visual Arts in New York where he discovered his passion for animation. He continues to keep in contact with that school's future artists, teaching and advising students in the animation program.
