San Diego to Get First Bachelor Degree Programs in Fashion
The Art Institute of California -- San Diego has Received Approval to Offer its Acclaimed Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing & Management Degree Programs
The Art Institute of California -- San Diego announced that it has received approval from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT) to begin offering two new fashion-related degree programs: Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design and Bachelor of Science in Fashion Marketing & Management. In a market where only certificate and associate's degree programs in fashion have previously been available, The Art Institute's programs will be the first accredited bachelor's degree fashion programs offered in San Diego County.
The Art Institute's offering of fashion programs in San Diego addresses demand factors in the employment market. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2006-2007 Occupational Outlook Handbook, two- thirds of salaried fashion designers were employed in either New York or California, with keen job competition in which employers will seek designers with a 2- or 4-year degree who are knowledgeable about textiles, fabrics, ornamentation, and fashion trends. The handbook forecasts that employment growth for fashion jobs will stem from a growing population demanding stylish and affordable options for clothing, footwear and accessories, especially among middle income consumers.
According to Elizabeth Erickson, president of The Art Institute of California -- San Diego, the greater San Diego region is teaming with employment opportunities for fashion-related graduates. "From the retail stores in Fashion Valley Mall and the Carlsbad Outlet strip to the designer boutiques of the Gaslamp and La Jolla, there are numerous opportunities for San Diegans to pursue fashion design and business careers locally," says Erickson.
