MulvannyG2 Architecture Celebrates Winning China Design Project
MulvannyG2 Architecture wins a major competition to add to its impressive portfolio of design projects in China. In an international competition among four firms, MulvannyG2 was chosen to develop a master plan for Qingdao Technological University in Qingdao, a major port city in China.
"This is a remarkable opportunity, a true rarity among projects. This victory will establish close ties with the Qingdao community and MulvannyG2 for years into the future," said Ming Zhang, Senior Partner and Design Director. "To be chosen among three other competing firms, one German and the other two local Chinese companies, is a testament to our design capabilities and solid reputation in China."
Qingdao Technological University is a top university with enrollment of about 20,000 students in 16 schools and is ranked in the top 10 percent of technology schools in China. The competition was created to identify the best designer for its new 217.5 acre campus. This site is nestled in a valley surrounded by forests.
Part of MulvannyG2's vision, and also one of the reasons the firm was chosen, is its emphasis on integrating this unique natural setting into the university campus. "Making this an ecologically responsive campus is a high design priority for us," said Peter Lian, Design Principal.
A key reason MulvannyG2 was chosen to design Qingdao Technological University is the firm's experience in high technology campus planning and design. For example, MulvannyG2 designed projects for Microsoft and Philip/ATL campuses in Washington. In Shanghai, the firm is currently working on Xinyue Corporate Headquarters Park and Zhangjiang Semiconductor Research Park.
In 2005, Ming Zhang accompanied Governor Christine Gregoire and her trade mission to China and hosted a visit to Zhangjiang Semiconductor Research Park. Today, MulvannyG2 has completed three of the five phases of the project. MulvannyG2 was asked to design this technology park for the City of Shanghai to help establish the city as a leader in world technology.
To achieve that goal, the park will be designed to attract top-notch technology and research institutions from around the world. The campus includes 80 buildings, and city officials expect it will employ 4,000 doctoral graduates within the next eight years. To date, about 90 percent of the building occupants have been determined. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2006.
MulvannyG2 Architecture has nearly 15 years of business experience in the Asia Pacific region. In 2003, the firm opened a Shanghai office to establish a local presence with its growing client network in China. Today, the firm has completed five projects in China and is currently engaged in 15 more. Based on MulvannyG2's business ties in China, the firm is one of 14 event sponsors for Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Seattle, Washington, on April 18th-19th.
