BIO 20: Preparing for an Exciting Autumn in Design
20th Biennial of Industrial Design

In October, Fužine Castle in Ljubljana will host the 20th Biennial of Industrial Design. BIO 20 is a comprehensive exhibition of well-designed products, visual communication and diverse design projects. The exhibition aims at presenting the latest currents in contemporary design and those innovative designs that search for solutions to the problems of the present-day lifestyle. Selected works in the exhibition are representative of sustainable development and social responsibility, meeting all the specific needs of their users. The items on display were produced after 1 January 2004 and were not shown at BIO 19.
Efforts to support the event, which has a history of more than 40 years, have been successful. The organising committee consists of Janez Škrabec, the president of Riko, along with other distinguished Slovene businessmen and designers. The media sponsors of BIO 20 are RTV Slovenia and the newspaper Delo.
The organisers have put more emphasis on the quality level of foreign exhibits, selected by foreign professional institutions and individual experts. Slovene entries will be assessed by an expert committee consisting of Edi Berk, Davorin Horvat, Ranko Novak, Almira Sadar, Branko Uršič and Fedja Vukić. All entries must be submitted by 12 June.
The opening ceremony will take place on 5 October, when the awards, gold and honorary medals and honorary commendations, will be granted to exhibitors selected by the international jury: Francisco Carrera (Spain); Julia Chou (Japan); Jacques Lange (South Africa), representing ICOGRADA, the international graphic design organisation; Massimo Pitis (Italy), representing BEDA, the European design association; and Judit Varhelyi (Hungary), a member of the executive committee of ICSID, the international industrial design society. Apart from the ICSID, ICOGRADA and BEDA honorary awards, the Design for All and RTV Slovenia Awards will be given for the best student work in the projects category.
One of the interesting events accompanying BIO 20 is undoubtedly Memory 3D, a project by Martin Bricelj. It is an interactive gallery presentation of the achievements of the history of Slovene industrial design, complete with a catalogue in the form of a holographic Memory Game. In cooperation with the British Council, a prominent exhibition of design challenges by young British designers entitled My World will be put on display. BIO 20 will be accompanied by many other design events: exhibitions, lectures, guided tours and workshops.
This year BIO will join the international partnership project Composites on Tour 2. In cooperation with IDCO GZS and the Kolpa company, a workshop on composites was organised on 12 May. Designers learnt about these little-known, advanced materials from the lectures of Ignaas Verpoest of Leuven University in Belgium; Janez Navodnik spoke of the application of composites in Slovenia, and Gorazd Malačič of the design firm Asobi presented the latest composite product called Isle Lounge, which had been exhibited at prestigious design events abroad, including the Milan furniture fair. Kolpa representatives made a presentation of their product Kerrock; they spoke about their design experiences and took the participants on a guided tour of their production plant. Such international contacts always create new opportunities and encourage creative business cooperation.
