Broken Furniture by Jason Miller: P Design Gallery
P Design Gallery presents an exhibition with Jason Miller September 15th to November 4th.
34-year-old Brooklyn based Jason Miller is a rising star in the contemporary design world. He has worked with both Karim Rashid and Jeff Koons. His irony imbued pieces both "subvert and satisfy consumer culture". Miller's inspiration comes from the lost and forgotten articles of a suburban garage or attic. An old shabby lounge chair is re-interpreted with strips of leather in place of duct tape. Antler chandeliers are molded, cast in gleaming white ceramic, and elevated to high design. Hand blown glass vases are broken and painstakingly glued back together with colored epoxy highlighting the purposeful imperfections.
In a new project titled "Dusty Tables", a minimalist maple table is finished to reveal unique patterns made by what appears to be a layer of dust embedded in the finish. "Tables get dusty. Why worry? The Dust marks time. It tells a story. It remembers". His "Seconds" tea set is a beautifully modern series of dish ware that references a traditional granny style floral and bird patterned tea set. However, here the patterns are mismatched off center, cut, and missing."Who says a whole bird is better than a half bird? Conventions are for suckers", Miller says.
Denver's newest design store P Design Gallery is hosting an exciting exhibition of Miller's work from September 15th to November 4th. A hybrid furniture store, design gallery, and museum shop P Design Gallery aims to break down the barriers between art and craft. Gallery curators Paul and Pifuka Hardt bring together furniture and design objects from some of the most noted contemporary designers around the globe including Tobias Wong, Tord Boontje, and Fredrikson:Stallard. Here a lamp can be a model for social change, a necklace can make comments on created demand and celebrity culture, and a table can be a means of reducing your carbon footprint.
