Italicising Fashion
According to the international marketing manager of the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), an Italian fashion and design institute, Mauro Cavagnaro, "Milan is the foremost fashion Capital of the world." Cavagnaro claimed that the institute was the biggest and the best fashion institution of Europe. He was recently in India to look at possibilities of admitting more and more Indian students to the institute, through agents in India.

Cavagnaro remarked, the biggest fashion school in Paris, which is considered as the melting pot of fashion, was smaller than the fashion theatre of IED. He said: "All the big brands in fashion belong to Italy; Paris is only a hub of `couture' or fashion for the rich, while in essence, Italy is the country of real fashion."
"Italy has a newfound interest in India to recruit Indian students, who are bright and can easily mix with the Italians. At present, we are targeting almost 100 students from India every year. This, according to him was in sharp contrast with the Chinese, who did not like to mix with anyone. Italians like Indians, for they are gregarious," Cavagnaro said.
At present, IED is focusing on recruiting Indian students for its one to three-year diploma courses in design, fashion and other related areas, which are being offered in English. However, gradually, we will like to have the Indian students enrolling for our PG courses as well, Cavagnaro remarked.
Speaking on the courses offered at IED, Cavagnaro said: "We have a bouquet of one-year intensive courses in fashion and textile design; interior design and jewellery design offered at Milan and a course in accessories and shoe design offered at Rome. The three-year courses include industrial design and interior design, among other such courses."
The minimum eligibility required for Indian students to enrol into a bachelor's programme at IED is a 10+2, while for the PG courses it is a bachelor's or equivalent, alongwith a detailed submission of the candidate's portfolio. "We are looking at the possibility of working out an arrangement with the Indian institutions like NIFT and others, whereby students can complete one-year of their course in India and the remaining course in Italy," Cavagnaro elaborated. He averred that such an arrangement would help the students get an education and exposure of a lifetime, which would pay rich dividends to them in the future.
According to Cavagnaro, "Indian students, after completing their education in Italy can look forward to getting placements in top-notch fashion organisations of the world." Italy believed in giving a work permit to such students, he added.
A student from NIFT, who was keen to go to Italy, Shuchi remarked, "I am keen to go to IED soon as it has integrated fashion and management course curriculum; secondly, I will get all the exposure in Milan that a fashion student can dream of."
To recruit students in India, IED has partnered with an agency called Trinity Education Services Pvt Ltd. Interested students can contact the agency for details. In the foreseeable future IED has plans to launch a centre in India as well.
