Stephane Pereira Joins Fluid Editorial
Stéphane Pereira, one of Europe's premiere talents, has joined New York City-based creative editorial studio, Fluid, as Senior Editor, it was announced today by Managing Partner/Executive Producer, Marc Schwartz.
As a freelancer, Pereira has been based in Paris for the last 15 years - the last ten working primarily on commercials for international agencies including BBDO, Publicis, and Euro RSCG, among others. For the past 2 ½ years he has collaborated extensively with French director Antoine Bardou-Jacquet of Partizan, Lionel Mougin, Laurent Chanez, Zoo and Les Elvis.
Pereira also edited films and is best known for his contributions to Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre (2002), which boasted the largest budget in French cinema history and was the 2nd highest grossing film of the past 30 years in France (after Titanic).
In announcing the addition of Pereira, Marc Schwartz stated, "Stéphane's status as an editor internationally is unparalleled. He is the real deal and is here to grow the company's profile, to help drive the company's vision." Added Executive Producer David Shapiro, "Stéphane's mandate is to push our company into one of the top editorial firms in the business. Born in Paris, Stéphane Pereira spent his early childhood in France. There he often visited his father, a sound engineer in film, on the set during filming for such French greats as Jacques Tati, Maurice Pialat, and Jacques Rivette - A cinema environment that also led him to discover the genius of the Marx Brothers, Akira Kurosawa, Charles Chaplin, and Mel Brooks at an early age.
At 14, after his parents divorced, Stéphane followed his father who moved to Bamako (Mali) to teach. The next two years in western Africa left him forever touched by that continent's humanity and beauty.
At 16, he joined his remarried mother in Fairbanks (Alaska), to live with his younger sister and brother. His family later moved to Carmel, California where Stéphane graduated from High School.
By then, Stéphane's attention had shifted to music. He sang in several curiously named rock bands like Lovely Hate and Karma Like Dog before deciding to return to his passion for film, and enrolling into film school.
He entered film school in Paris with the desire to become a director, but with the feeling that editing was a very important part of the directorial process. And as all of his school peers were fighting to be around the camera during school productions, Stéphane found himself with no one competing to fill the editing spot. He ended up editing every possible school film during his 3 years of study. Learning the craft of editing, and finding himself naturally at home in the editing room, Stéphane had simply found his vocation.
When, after his film studies, it came time to work and make a living, Stéphane began working as a freelance editor in Paris.
He edited his very first 52' documentary (for Canal Plus) during his first year as a freelance editor and went on to edit many more, as well as short films. His tools at that time being either Sony video edit controllers or celluloid film flatbeds.
Soon, he witnessed the arrival of a new technology that was going to revolutionize editing: non-linear digital systems. Always on the look out for anything happening in his craft, Stéphane jumped aboard the digital wagon right from the start learning to use the Lightworks and the Avid and then teaching many of his colleagues how to use them while continuing his career as an editor.
After 5 years of experience as an editor, Stéphane started editing commercials. His strong aesthetic sensibility, his creativity, and knowledge of the film language caught the eye of many through his work in collaboration with award winning director Lionel Mougin.
With that recognition came the opportunity to edit his first feature film, Le Poulpe directed by Guillaume Nicloux, an audacious comedy drama that received warm reviews. Stéphane then returned to editing commercials as his reputation grew. He worked with such talented directors as Laurent Chanez (Identity), Alain Chabat, Zoo, and Philippe André while still pursuing his collaboration with Lionel Mougin.
In September 2000, comedian-director Alain Chabat asked Stéphane to edit Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, his second feature film. A huge undertaking, the biggest budget in French cinema history, Asterix went on to become a massive hit in Europe and the 7th highest grossing film of all time in France.
After this 13 months adventure in the world of movies, Stephane again returned to his love - editing commercials. He developed a collaboration with award winning directors Antoine Bardou-Jacquet (Partizan), Les Elvis (Partizan), Matthieu Mantovani (Paranoid), and H5 (Little Minx). He also worked with award winning directors Dominic Murphy, Eric Coignoux, Traktor, Kinka Usher, Josh Taft, and others.
After 15 years of experience as an editor in both films and commercials, Stéphane Pereira has now decided to pursue his professional journey in the USA. He joins the great team at Fluid in New York with the desire to build a strong editorial boutique, and to express his creativity and sensibility. In the land that he left as a teenager, he comes back as a man with a craft.
On joining Fluid Pereira stated, "I want to continue to grow professionally and I feel that the US is the appropriate place for me to touch on, many interesting projects. I have chosen Fluid as my professional home. We form a uniquely creative group and together I feel we can continue to build and grow the studio in a variety of directions."
Stéphane Pereira has joined the editorial roster at FLUID which includes Editor/Designer Alex Frowein; Editors Greg Letson, Scott Philbrook and Victor Melton; Assistant Editors Christian Pulfer, Michael Equi and Zeke O'Donnell; Managing Partner/Executive Producer Marc Schwartz; and Editorial Producers Virginia Galvan and Rasha C. Hamilton. The original music scoring/sound design division of the company, Fluid Music, has a senior team including Composer/Executive Music Producer David Shapiro, Composers Andrew Sherman, Judson Crane, Ian Jeffreys and Sound Designer Fred Szymanski; all of whom are represented in-house by Jessica Millington and Mendy Froelich.
