Master's in Light Product Design

First University Master's in Light Product Design organized by Politecnico di Milano, SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design and Consorzio POLI.design.
Artificial light is present in home, commercial and industrial settings, in urban spaces and within all the places we use for socializing and meeting.
Promoted by Politecnico di Milano - Faculty of Design, Consorzio POLI.Design and SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design, the university master's in Light Product Design investigates the design of lighting equipment and systems, which is today one of the most stimulating and complex in industrial design. The first level Master's will get under way on 7 May 2007 and finish in May 2008.
The complete specialization, which is worth 60 educational credits, looks in depth at the entire lighting product development process. The Master's aim is to supply designers with sound design skills and across-the-board professional tools in order to interact with lighting firms' production technicians, quality managers, marketing and sales teams.
Different competences converge in the lighting product. The academic programme deals with photometric, chromatic and perceptive aspects, formal and emotional values of the lighting equipment, technological issues up to product management, production processes and legal restrictions. Several project works, entrusted to well-known designer like Huub Ubbens and Matali Crasset, give students the challenge to design the "right light" for hospitality and exhibition spaces, transit areas, household interiors, workspaces and for urban exteriors.
Lesson attendance is three days a week from Monday to Wednesday. The other days are for group work, visits and meetings with companies and designers. The programme length is 890 hours spread between classroom and internship. The overall commitment for each student is around 1500 hours, including attendance and private study.
The university master's in Light Product Design is held at the Design Faculty of Politecnico di Milano and includes the use of the Laboratories of Lighting Design, Photometry, Colorimetry and Perceptology.
Enrolment on the Master's is open to Italian and international students who have graduated or are graduating in industrial design, architecture, engineering and their equivalents. The official language is Italian but a good knowledge of English, as well as the mastery of the main professional software packages, is required.
There is a restricted number of enrolments. To request admission, which is not binding, it is necessary to present a CV, the complete portfolio and to go through a selection interview. The candidates admitted will be able to complete their enrolments with the necessary documentation within April 2007.
