"Our honorary degrees celebrate the values of our institution: recognition of individual achievement and creativity, best practices in design, and social consideration. All of these are brilliantly embodied by Metropolis," said Richard Koshalek, president of Art Center College of Design. "Horace and Susan richly deserve our recognition for their visionary perspectives on the role of design in the world, as well as our gratitude for their support of our mission and our programs."
"Long before any of their peers in the media, Horace and Susan recognized the unique opportunities and responsibilities of design and, hence, the ability of designers to improve the world we live in," added Erica Clark, senior vice president of international initiatives for the College. "Their passion for this is evident in every issue of Metropolis. It has deeply impressed our faculty and students, and, becomes more relevant each year." The honorary degrees were conferred during the Art Center's December 16th graduation ceremonies on its campus in Pasadena, CA. Previous honorary degree recipients have included the photographer and artist Lee Friedlander; Gabriel Hawawini of the INSEAD global business school; Kigge Hvid, CEO of Copenhagen's Index:Award; and Kit Hinrichs, a partner at Pentagram Design and an Art Center alumnus.
Art Center College of Design has been a leader in art and design education for nearly 75 years. The college offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide range of disciplines, as well as public programs offering design education for all ages and levels of experience. The college's curriculum emphasizes a commitment to social and cultural engagement and gives students the tools and skills with which to effect change and address real-world issues.
"Susan and I are deeply honored to be recognized by Art Center, which has made such major contributions to design through its world-respected educational standards," said Mr. Havemeyer.
Prior to founding Metropolis, Mr. Havemeyer worked in book publishing at Doubleday and was an advisor to Skyline, a journal published by the Institute of Architecture and Urban Studies.
Ms. Szenasy, whose background includes senior-level editorial positions at Interiors and Residential Interiors, has authored several books on design, teaches design history and design ethics at New York's Parsons School of Design, and is a frequent industry speaker. She also holds an honorary doctorate from Kendall College of Art and Design.
Metropolis Metropolis magazine has covered the designed environment for over 25 years. Each issue addresses every area of design-architecture, interior design, planning, landscape architecture, technology, industrial design, wayfinding and graphic design-illuminating the process that creates great design and projects. The magazine, which pioneered coverage and advocacy of sustainable, collaborative design, sorts out the significant from the insignificant for its busy audience in accessible prose. Metropolis's conferences include Wonderbrands, Wonderbrands West, Net@Work, Business UnUsual, Teaching Green and Design Entrepreneurs.
