Artlandia SymmetryWorks 4
Artlandia, Inc., maker of award-winning pattern design software, has released Artlandia SymmetryWorks 4, a new major version of the popular plug-in for Adobe Illustrator. SymmetryWorks 4 builds around new capabilities for working with replicas (live copies) that automate the creation of new classes of pattern designs and provide new ways to quickly and automatically add repetition to patterns and enhance the harmony and balance in pattern designs.
Debuted in 2001, Artlandia SymmetryWorks has become the tool of choice for professional pattern design in all industries, including surface, textile, carpet, apparel, fashion, book, greeting card, web, print, and other design. The plug-in is also used by illustrators, sculptors, publishers, quilt makers, craftsmen, fine artists, and other creative professionals. SymmetryWorks creates repeat patterns of all symmetry types with the click of a mouse. The produced pattern remains hot-linked to the seed (motif). When the seed is edited, the plug-in automatically updates the entire pattern. This is the key feature that saves the designer's time and makes working with SymmetryWorks both productive and fun.
Artlandia SymmetryWorks 4 greatly expands the replica feature. First, by letting the designer make live copies of selected objects, the plug-in can produce patterns that look more symmetric or less symmetric, depending on the designer's goal. Notably, all-over and tossed repeats can now be created much more easily.
Another major addition is the ability to spawn multiple replica copies (multi-replicas) and automatically arrange them in spirals, mosaics, pinwheels, gradations, and other object arrangements within a pattern.
With line seed elements, this feature lets the user instantly generate and interactively edit checks, eccentrics, and guilloche patterns, and produce a variety of optical, moire, and other effects.
The new version also provides support for applying live effects to replica art and optionally accumulating effects, which lets the designer emphasize (or de-emphasize) objects and effects. The plug-in also allows the user to hide a part of the seed and show it only after applying suitable effects in replicas. This lets the designer create counterchanged and other highly sophisticated pattern designs.
Artlandia SymmetryWorks 4 is immediately available for all Mac OS and Windows 98/NT/2000/XP platforms, for all versions of Adobe Illustrator starting from 8.0 through Illustrator CS2. The downloadable version can be purchased for $229 or for $419 with Artlandia SymmetryShop, a companion plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. The package with the Artlandia Collection costs $619. The price for upgrades to SymmetryWorks 4 from all earlier versions is $75. The software can also be purchased in the CD-ROM version with a printed user guide for $255 or for $469 with SymmetryShop, with the upgrade price at $99. Site license users will receive a free upgrade that is expected to ship next week.
