Dulux Colour Awards 2007 Winners
The 2007 Dulux Colour Awards tonight announced this year's winners at a gala event held at Melbourne's Eureka Tower.
Libbi Bennison of Liberati Colour was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix title for her outstanding entry, Golden Monkey Lounge Bar and Asian Tapas in Melbourne. A 1930's Shanghai inspired space, Golden Monkey embraced colours of heat, glamour and seduction, using the palette to define these dramatic elements rather than being at the forefront of the way the space felt. According to judges, Bennison's sophisticated application of colour not only worked perfectly with the environment, but fused dramatically with other finishes and surfaces. As a result Golden Monkey was also awarded the winning Commercial Interior category.
Judged by a first-round panel of Dulux colour experts followed by final jurors Nina Campbell, UK interior designer, Abbie Galvin from Bligh Voller Nield and Tim O'Sullivan from Multiplicity, other category winners were:
Commercial Interior - Golden Monkey Lounge Bar and Asian Tapas by Libbi Bennison of Liberati Colour Commercial Exterior - Richmond Train Station upgrade by David Shultis of Cox Architects and Planners Residential Interior - Bond House by Mark Cashman of Marsh Cashman Koolloos Architects Residential Exterior - Albury Residence by David Boyle of David Boyle Architects Student Specifier 04 - 06 years - Guadalajara Library by Nicholas Barber of University of Sydney Student Specifier 01 - 03 years - Handbags and Gladrags by Gemma Corfe of Curtain University
Drawing some of the most acclaimed architects and interior designers in the country, the Dulux Colour Awards are established as the most prestigious program of their kind in Australia, with a commitment to fostering and celebrating the industry's creative use of colour, as Dulux spokesperson and first-round judge Andrea Lucena-Orr explained.
"These Awards are motivated by one single element in the overall creative process; colour. Clearly at Dulux we're passionate about colour and these Awards enable us to celebrate and showcase those who share our passion," said Lucena-Orr.
Entrants this year were asked to explore what colour means to them and judges were impressed with the results, with the distinguished panel making the following comments:
"It has been encouraging to see colours used specifically in their particular environmental context rather than following trends and being fashionable. The outstanding projects succeeded in responding to their surrounds rather than trying to force themselves into context," said the three finalist panel members.
Judges agreed that longevity, livability and looking at the role of colour in complementing the environment influenced their decisions.
The 2007 Dulux Colour Awards introduced an increased prize pool of $25,000, including the overall Grand Prix prize valued at $17,000, and finalist works exhibited at designEX. In addition, as part of Dulux's sponsorship of IDA's Colour in Commercial Interior Design and Colour in Residential Interior Design Awards, Dulux Colour Award entries will be automatically entered into the IDA Awards free of charge. Grand Prix winner Libbi Bennison will also enjoy a business class return airfare to, and five-star accommodation in London where she will spend one week working alongside finalist judge Nina Campbell and her colleagues.
Guests at this evening's Dulux Colour Awards Ceremony were treated to an elaborate affair, with all finalists entries showcased in the spectacular space of Eureka Tower's Level 89.

Commercial Interior - Golden Monkey Lounge Bar and Asian Tapas by Libbi Bennison of Liberati Colour Dulux colours: Hot Lips, Red Blooded, Hot Chillie, Russet Rhinestone, Oriental Spice, Mineral Green
Judges were impressed with the sophisticated use of colour throughout Golden Monkey and agreed that Bennison's approach succeeded in showcasing the overall space and environment. This resulted in a very dramatic interior that combined colours well, rather than singling any particular shade to "jump out" and impact independently. The level of theatre achieved through colour was also highly appropriate for a bar; such a decadent palette would not have achieved the same result in a residential interior, for example.

Commercial Exterior - Richmond Train Station upgrade by David Shultis of Cox Architects and Planners Dulux colours: Sulphur, Vivid White, Factory Black, Domino
Using a combination of bold colours offset against a stark palette, the judges agreed that Shultis' strong graphic and gritty use of colour was highly appropriate given the project's urban location. The overall approach worked to visually invigorate the precinct in a sustainable way.

Residential Interior - Bond House by Mark Cashman of Marsh Cashman Koolloos Architects Dulux colours: Tickling, Mitlon Moon, White on White, Eye of Newt, Manor House
The judges noted Marsh's beautifully restrained palette and a sophisticated blend of whites on the rippled ceiling, which worked to create a wonderful sense of depth. This combination of white on white was praised for its subtle delineation on form, with judges agreeing that bright colours don't always need to be employed in order to create a feature.

Residential Exterior - Albury Residence by David Boyle of David Boyle Architects Dulux colours: Mud Skipper, Hot Lips, Vivid White, Zen, Carmen Miranda, Gecko, Highgate, Shimmer, Firey Glow, Sea Elephant, Baby Motive
The judges were taken by the 1950s inspired colour tones, with subtle variations and colour providing a depth and complexity to the exterior. The use of colour worked to create a pattern that complimented the environment - specifically a pool below that almost acted as a beautiful mirroring reflection.

Student Specifier Years 04 - 06 - Guadalajara Library by Nicholas Barber of University of Sydney Dulux colours: Timeless Grey, Klute, Pelaco, Simone Weil
Judges were taken by the uplifting exploration of somewhat somber colours, with the overall effect evoking a sculptural feel to the space.
Student Specifier Years 01- 03 - Handbags and Gladrags by Gemma Corfe of Curtin University Dulux colours: Silkwort, Djeskau, Hot Flamingo, Bunny Pink, Iced Volvo, Neutral Intrigue, Ruby Quartz, Aroma
The judges agreed this was a youthful and fun use of colour that reflected the personality of its occupant.
