Design Matters! Poster Recognized in Graphis Design Annual 2008
Regarded as the most respected design annual in the world, Graphis has selected this year's UCDA Foundation's Design Matters! poster for inclusion in the Design Annual 2008. The Design Annual 2008 is the ultimate design collection, featuring the year's most outstanding work in a variety of disciplines. Featured categories include books, brochures, corporate identity, interactive, letterhead, packaging, stamps, typography and more! All winners have earned the new Graphis Gold and/or Platinum Awards for excellence. The annual will be available August 2007.
The UCDA Foundation is an organization that supports the University & College Designers Association in attaining its goals for design education, member education and charitable support.
This limited edition poster is the first in a series of posters designed by prominent designers for the UCDA Foundation. Designed by Domenica Genovese, partner at GCF (Baltimore, MD), is a leader in design for education, creating hundreds of award-winning communications for such institutions as Macalester College, Vanderbilt University, Hamilton College, The Smithsonian's National Postal Museum, Westminster Theological Seminary, the Central Institute for the Deaf, and the University of Virginia.
The photograph used was by Jody Zamirowski, former design director at the College of DuPage (Glen Ellyn, IL). Zamirowski is a long term member and board member of the University & College Designers Association who has always seen the potential of a UCDA Foundation to support and enhance the programming of UCDA.
Brenda Foster, also partner at GCF (Baltimore, MD), applies her background in marketing, management, and psychology to help clients identify their needs and develop and implement effective marketing strategies. Foster's eloquent quote about design can be seen on the poster: "If you draw a dot to represent your brain and one to represent your heart, design is the line that connects the two. Without design there is no connection between intellect and passion."
The printing of the 11" x 17" giclee print was done by David Whaley, director of publications and visual arts at Longwood University (Farmville, VA). The term "giclee print" connotes an elevation in printmaking technology. Images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. The giclee printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction. The quality of the giclee print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.
The limited edition poster is still available for $50 on the UCDA Foundation website at http://ucda.com/foundation.lasso
