DWELL on Design Opens to the Public
Today marks the opening of the 2nd annual DWELL on Design conference and exhibition. The event is open to conference attendees Fri-Sun and the public Sat-Sun.
The publishing brand best known by its tagline, "At home in the Modern World" opens this year's conference today with a stellar lineup of speakers. Moderated by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Journalist John Hockenberry, the program includes: DWELL® editor-in-Chief Sam Grawe and other editors; Alice Waters of Chez Panisse and The Edible Schoolyard; Craig Hartman, FAIA, and Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill who led the Treasure Island Redevelopment project; Reed Kroloff, Dean of Tulane's school of architecture; Steve Glenn of Living Homes and many more noteworthy luminaries.
The theme of the conference, "Building Community in the Modern World," is focused on eco-design and sustainable design and materials, and is intended to spark inspiration and dialogue between designers and enthusiasts. Mayor Gavin Newsom is expected to attend the Friday evening Opening Reception.
Held at the San Francisco Concourse, at 8th and Brannan, the weekend includes 100+ preeminent exhibitors and a newly introduced public venue, DWELL OUTDOOR designed by Shades of Green, showcasing a ground-breaking pop-up prefab community. Five full-scale structures will be open for touring and exploration with architects and designers on-hand to provide additional insights and information. Installations include the weeHouse, Design Within Reach Airstream, the kitHaus and Modern Cabana. In addition, Zack/Devito will be assembling an InstaHouse in real time to demonstrate the ease of constructing a prefab house using materials designed for quick assembly.
"We have planned this conference to celebrate and learn more about what it means to build sustainable communities in the modern world and to live intentionally," says DWELL President and Publisher Michela O'Connor Abrams. "We have an inspirational line up of exhibitors and speakers, including community forums on "How to green your home" and "How to build prefab," and we encourage anyone interested in truly experiencing and exploring modern design to attend."
In partnership with AIA San Francisco, DWELL on Design will serve as the headquarters for the annual AIA/SF Living Home Tours. Tickets for the tours, given 11:00am-4:00pm on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th, are available at the Concourse.
