Fragiles by Die Gestalten Verlag

For Design Miami 2007, dgv presents Fragiles, an extraordinary collection of work created from porcelain, ceramics and glass that indicate how visual culture and high tech production processes are influencing and reshaping this delicate territory in pioneering ways.
Fragiles is an eclectic collection of contemporary porcelain, ceramic and glass objects by a new wave of designers who are manifesting their creative visions out of fragile materials. Fragiles presents over one hundred innovative objects that expand and challenge our notion of these classical materials and traditions, simultaneously exploring a new aesthetic approach and technological boundaries. From experimental and avant-garde to evocative retro-inspired reinterpretations, these cutting-edge examples indicate how visual culture and high tech production processes are influencing and reshaping this delicate territory in pioneering ways.
Exclusively for Fragiles, dgv has commissioned Arne Quinze, the trail-blazing, self-made designer, and Creative Director of Quinze and Milan to create unique limited edition glass pieces in conjunction with traditional German artisans. They are unique hybrids of art and design sensibilities imbued with Quinze's sheer brilliance. In addition, two new porcelain and glass creations by Nik Schweiger from the celebrated interdisciplinary studio 3deluxe will be introduced as well as a never seen before exquisite chandelier by Hans van Bentem and ceramic lettering by Stephanie DeArmond. These pieces will be unveiled at dgv's temporary design gallery during Design Miami.
The inspiring showcase also includes striking products in all shapes, sizes and editions, ranging from 10 to 15,000 Euros; the "Broken Family" ceramic crockery set by Jurgen Bey, super-sized vases for Bisazza by Jaime Hayon, fantastically hand painted "One Minute Delftware" by Marcel Wanders from his personal editions, "Beads & Pieces" by Hella Jongerius for Artecnica's Design With Conscience collection with ceramics adorned with glass beads, fine china arsenal by Charles Krafft, "Missoni Patchwork" vases by Stephen Burks, "Ken Kuts" raunchy Murano glassware by Jerszy Seymour and an exciting selection of recent cutting-edge design objects by both established and emerging talents. The projects featured in Fragiles are playful in character and concocted in an unconventional manner.
dgv specializes in developing content for aficionados of cutting-edge visual culture worldwide. The company is best known for the more than two hundred fifty books published that document and anticipate vital design movements. dgv's background, knowledge and insight into contemporary visual culture accumulated as an internationally successful design publisher promises success for Fragiles.
Expanding on the exhibiton and topic, dgv will release the book Fragiles: Porcelain, Glass and Ceramics in March 2008.
